I think with a crown they (forgive the language) grind the tooth down to a post or at least remove all the damaged unstable parts and then give it a cap that is cemented to the stable tooth remainder. The cap looks like a tooth.

I am having the same thing done on two of my molars. Plus all fillings replaced. Plus, today I had that implant. I'm really over the dental work but so glad I have a dentist I like. I was pretty scared today but made an active decision to be brave and it worked.

Crown's are no big shake. I have one on each of my molars...I think. I have such bad teeth! The grinding will depend on how bad the tooth is. Given that you've broken it....maybe you won't have a lot of grinding. ;) The crap they use to make the mold of the crown tastes absolutely disgusting, but he don't have to deal with it for long. The temp crown feels really weird and rough. Each time I've gone back in for the real deal, I don't even get a shot. The temp comes off no pain and the new goes on pretty much pain free. If you're dentist is good, you should be ready to leave at that point. But, sometimes he has to do a little adjusting to make it just right. But, really, overall....I think I'd rather get a crown than a filling!
