I think I've mentioned before that I used to love LKH's books, but after Cerulean Sins I stopped reading. I was so dissappointed in the book and angry at myself for spending that much money on a hard cover book that I just absolutely hated... that I couldn't be bothered to read the next one. I did eventually pick up Micha in paper back.. but it's been sitting on my shelf not read for several years. I even recently considered donating all of my LKH books (Merry Gentry books too) to my local used book store as I would at least get some credit for them.
I want to read her books. But I thouht in the characters were so far out from where they started they were hardly recognizable. It was very disgruntled, and chose to show my displeasure in the only way I knew how, outside of writing to LKH and telling her so. I realize she's still on the best seller list, but I know that she's not getting my twenty dollars.
Having said all that.. Where I'm getting my smut these days is by reading Lora Leigh She's not as refined at LKH, and

Wow. I am planning on plagiarizing large chunks of you comment the next time someone asks if I like laurel k hamilton. First few books were great, the turned too romancy for me, but kinda readable, and then we hit the vampire/werewolf/everything smut wall. Which, ok, I'm good with some smut, but the characters have mutated so much they're not the same. Oh well.
Have you read any of Jim Butchers stuff? No romance or smut, but extrodinarily good urban fantasy. And also Patricia Briggs and kim harrison.
See, I like the occasional vampire/werewolf/everything smut (especially the everything smut!). No, it's not the same sort of literary quality of her earlier books, but I don't exactly look for literary quality in my porn smut. ;)
I love Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books (both in print and as audiobooks...heck, even as the TV series!), but haven't read his other series yet. I started with the Kim Harrison books as audiobooks and have been impatiently waiting to get #4 for months - I got it for Christmas! As for Patricia Briggs, I've got one of her books on hold at the library and I'm just waiting for it to become available.
Any other recommendations? I'm always on the lookout for new authors/series.
Please feel free to take any or all of that. And because I need to share a reason to bleach ones mind, a friend of mine in the publishing business said that the books started changing right about the time LKH started her own troika, with her husband and her "assistant/bodyguard". Explains a lot, but YIKES!!
Jim Butcher is one of two authors I will buy in hard cover as soon as they come out. My publishing friend has been pushing me to read Patricia Briggs, but in the past year she's turned me onto Kelley Armstrong, Keri Arthur and Kim Harrison. I love all three of them, and they all bring a level of smut that doesn't make you want to start humming porn music. I'm more then half way through The Outlaw Demon Wails, and I don't want to have to wait for the next to come out and for me to get it from the library! But I'd suggest either Kelley Armstrong, who does witches, vamps, werewolves and demons... and Keri who does vamp/were hybrids. Good stuff!
