Guantanamo may be closing.  Ok probably not but it's been talked about, which I believe is almost certainly just more smoke being blown up the American publics ass, this time by a Democrat.  Not that it matters whether it closes or not, we are experiencing no shortage of secret prisons where we can torture people however things pan out.

Yes, torture is effective at extracting confessions (and bits of flesh and bone and sinew, etc.). It's also a dandy way of communicating to all the people who are associated with the victim, people whom the government would like to intimidate and keep under control: it demonstrates exactly what is likely to happen to them if they aren't cooperative and obedient. I think we agree: torture IS amazingly effective, just not at getting accurate and usable information out of the victims.
