I like when I feel like I've accomplished something sure, but it's these odd 'congratulations you made it around the sun again!' type of occassions that I tend to shy away from.

Well, the key is timing. You gotta mention it last minute, then add a good hang-dog type expression and put your hands in your pockets in the manner of 'awwwww shucks'. Thus guilt and sympathy are used as a fuel for well-wishes, making it the best birthday shout-outs evar!
