I had no idea you were a musician. That's really interesting, as I was, too. I was *almost* a music major in college (auditioned and was accepted), but my mom convinced me I'd never make any money at it. *rolls eyes* I regret leaving my music behind as well. I haven't even touched my flute. In years. Which really is a crying shame, but..
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your mentor. He sounds like an amazing and inspiring person. I can only imagine how you must have approached the evening with a great sense of anticipation of seeing him again. It's wise of you to realize how he has influenced you in ways much broader than music.
I didn't know that about you either! I actually didn't go to college to become a musician; I had been a fairly serious pianist in high school but was hoping to major in English in college. It was JS who urged me to major in music and I ended up doing a double-major and music and English.
Do you at least still have your flute? We have a piano at home (although I was an organist in my professional career) but I have carpal tunnel and tendinitis now so I don't touch it much either.
My flute is laying in its case buried somewhere in my son's room. He asked me to get it out one day awhile back because he wanted to try it.
Yeah, I did the whole 9 yards like you - played a whole bunch of instruments, wrote musical arrangements that our marching band played, studied music theory, played in community orchestra, was lead sax player in jazz band, etc., etc. One problem with me, though, is that I can't sing.
