Yeah, there's a cult around 1911's. It's about as silly as the Glock kool-aid drinkers.
I don't remember if they had any .40's up here to try. I also know a lot of people like the .40 because it's usually a easy switch to .357Sig which is a freakin' hot round from what I hear.
I'll have to play it by ear.
This is all a bit addicting because I want to try some older ones too. The HK P7 is really attractive to me. It's old german police surplus and very slim (single stack and a really low bore axis). The squeeze cocker is a novelty I'd like to say I at least tried too.
No, the front strap of the grip is the cocker. You squeeze the grip and it cocks the striker. If you're not squeezing the grip it can't fire at all. It's neat because it's all single action. Not even the half DA that striker fired are.
I hate what the guy says because he's not giving much credit to how old the technology is. Like he says the cocker is complicated... not really, there isn't a modern gun I can think of that let's you disassemble anything but the slide in the field. You can get down to the bare bones just in the field.
I like single action so I will deal with DA for the first shot.
I'm glad to here you might go M&P. I really liked that gun. I was thinking you should at least try a DA/SA gun though. You've shot your dad's but you haven't tried any of the newer and popular hammer fired ones. The Glock, XD and M&P are all striker fired.
