AMP12: Day 12
My ongoing attempts at creating podfic coverart seems to be equal parts hit and miss. Some days, I'll whip up a work of heartbreaking pixellated genius, so gorgeous it would make da Vinci weep....and other days, I feel pretty meh when I look at my cut'n'paste hack job. However, I think that tonight's cover errs closer to the hit side of the scale than to a miss. It's got Jon Walker (well, a dark-brunette dude who's face is obscured by a camera - totally a legitimate approximation of Mr. Walker), and it's got fancy letters, and I managed to get that 'reverse image reflection thingy' of Brendon and Spencer reflected in the camera's lens (they're sitting on a couch, and Brendon's leaning into Spencer a little (body language!), and they're even in front of a red backdrop - it's just like that first scene in Jon's photostudio!), and I even found some pretty floral accents for the title. Why so much focus on the picture for tonight's podfic? Well, it is thematically appropriate, seeing as how the story for the podfic in question is my favorite view (heh, a picture pun!), written by elfiepike (story also available at AO3). Story summary? "The one where Jon is a fetish photographer."
Now, I have lots of feelings about this story, but I'm lazy, so I'll just quote to you some of the stuff I like the most about it, and let that convince you to read/listen. Like, here's the part where Jon is explaining his Concept to Spencer and Brendon: "So," Jon says, "my concept is a pretty vanilla dominant-submissive series, mostly with a theme of possessive body language and subservience; with people like Bill and Pete, it's not something I get to try very often." This line is great, because we get to see this kinda quirky humor of understatement to Jon (it's funnier if you already know the characterizations of Pete and William from earlier in the story; suffice it to say that Pete's a fan of bathrooms, no pants, and shibari, and let's leave it at that). Oh! There's also this line: They don't ever get completely naked--Spencer stays fully dressed minus his socks and shoes, and Brendon keeps his jeans on, with the addition of the blindfold and cuffs, but it still has an intimate feeling that Jon likes, a power dynamic he thinks is kinky and interesting in its own way. I love this, how it pretty much sums up all the tension of this story. Yeah, Jon's an erotic photographer, and yeah, Spencer and Brendon are his models, but it's not about getting naked and groiny. It's about....exploring that dynamic between Brendon and Spencer, and then poking it with sticks to ramp up the tension that much more. It's delicious. Sure, the story's got some possessive language, and some jerking off, but mostly there's just a LOT of sexual tension.
