it's been a little over a year since ryan and i moved into the apartment/condo/whatever you want to call it ... it's actually been almost 14 months since we moved in together, but i don't like to think about our time in corporate housing ( Read more... )

You know, the part about not having close friends ... that is a system shock for us kids coming out of college. Unless we move to a college town and immerse ourselves in a collegiate experience (perhaps working AT a college or university?), we just aren't going to have the type of easy connections we had while we were in school and that fact affects even me, the relatively antisocial curmudgeon. The few friends I have here keep moving away or talking of moving away and it's leaving me with feelings of abandonment and inadequacy. This is a pretty serious issue for people our age, even if we're lucky enough to have someone we love right there in our own home. If you can afford to see a therapist, I'd recommend it for nothing else but the cathartic effect of just telling a caring stranger what's bothering you. I wept during my first session and I didn't really expect the level of emotion I had bubbling under the surface.

if there's been one really wonderful thing about moving back to chicago, something that's bigger than all the other things, it's returning to a place where i have an almost built-in social network. yes, i want to meet more people here, but it's so nice to be able to call a friend and hop on a train or walk a few blocks to get to them. in columbus, it was always "well, i have to work" or "gosh, i can't make it that weekend. i';m sorry". It's really just wonderful to be in a place where you can feel loved.
