july, july! it never seemed so strange

July, already! It doesn’t feel like five weeks since the last time I felt sociable enough to post here, but that’s what my little lj calendar tells me. Truer words, Colin Meloy, truer words.

Maybe it’s because, ultimately, the character arcs on Angel are so much more satisfying to me - if by satisfying, I mean open-wound painful - rather than frustrating or unengaging (for everyone except S/B, natch).

See, I have almost exactly the opposite reaction (except about the S/B, of course). I find the character arcs on Angel to be so fiercely driven by plot that the characters themselves just seem like cogs to get the plot from Point A to Point B. For me, that's particularly true for Cordelia, who has pretty much no development at all after the middle of S3, and for Gunn who didn't get anything resembling character development until S5. Fred too, who mostly just seems to be "cute smart girl" until she dies. Wes is the only one who really seems to undergo real character development, and I have to admit not all of the Dark!Wes stuff feels very organic to me. The Scoobies didn't always change and grow in ways that were attractive, but for me it always felt true to their characters, and they never remained stagnant.

Totally agree about Cordy - I've kinda given up on making sense of it and am going for active repression of almost everything past Birthday ( ... )
