In answer to your gas question, it still only costs 2.60ish per gallon in Portland, where I now live, so it's still pretty affordable for me. It costs less than 30 dollars to fill my tank, and I can live with that. The result is, I haven't really changed my driving habits. If a tank of gas went over 30 dollars, then I would. But I think it's important to have an efficient vehicle regardless, and I'm quite happy with the mileage my little honda accord gets.
By the way, do you know why some places in the country have higher gas prices than others? It might be an interesting thing to include in your paper. I heard that gas went over 3 bucks a gallon in Santa Cruz.
