I don't read the updates and news from LJ on purpose, but I always log into FB through the main page (that is to say, I don't log in, because only I use this computer, but I visit the site from the main page, instead of going directly to my friend's list) where it is visible quite clearly.
I think it's a silly and unnecessary update and one people weren't asking for at all - in fact, for the most part, I think people were pretty happy about not having to see who visited their LJs - or, to be more accurate, not having to worry about other people being able to see when they'd visited other people's journals.
Yeah, I get what you mean. Just like you said, it wasn't an issue people had been bringing up. I n all the years I've had an LJ, I've never not once heard someone say they wished they knew who'd been on their page, you know? It's weird. It just seems like they were stretching what they could do to see, maybe? IDK.
I'm starting to think they changed it to give people something to complain about while distracting them from complaining about things that are actually more important in terms of how the site is run and the changes that've been made. You know?

I'm not sure I want to know who is or is NOT visiting me?! LOL! Because then I'd be like "THEY DON'T LOVE ME!" LOL. I dunno.
