I gotta say, I don't entirely agree with your opinion. I quite liked the idea of Steve Irwin, like a cameo of amusement. The only country stupid enough to believe we're all like that is the USA (I have a slight objection to calling them America, since there's a North and South and a heap of other countries, although the term American isn't inaccurate). I'm willing to believe the Poms aren't that stupid. Steve's death is pretty damned sad when you think about all the cool stuff he did in his life. There are millions of people who'd probably get up and follow their dreams because of larger than life people like that. (Although the people that have inspired me to follow my dreams are all people I know in real life, but you never know... plus promoting conservation is NEVER bad

The saddest thing is that in my entire MSN list online right now (about 40 people), there's about 25 messages about Steve Irwin, and only one for Colin Thiele, an author who played a major part in the childhood of many people. He even wrote me a letter once. So while it's a pity Steve Irwin is gone, I lament the loss of one of Australia's best authors... and I lament even more so that nobody seems to care.
