Well, for LJ, you can add friends, have your lj entries open, friends only, private, or custom groups to view which.

Join communities that are in fandoms you're into and search the interest features.
I just stay close to my friends and stick with my parts in the fandom (e.g SV - Cloisers, and ED fans)

I dont frequently update my personal lj, and I hardly talk about my family life anymore. Fangirling in a must though ^_^
