Just a few hours ago my husband and I dropped off our 18 year old son - his biological son, my stepson, if you want to get technical-at an unremarkable Marriott Hotel that marks the beginning of his service in the US Army. This is more than an R post, you know. It's an essay. About coming of age, and facing the unknown, and the barb of a hook...the metaphors for that one just flow, don't they?

This is beautiful, and Dad's rehearsed line is beautiful, and the fact that they had a day too busy and eventful for wallowing or tears or worry is beautiful.

So glad you shared it.

You know, when Candy asked me to join R, I made a list of "fun" topics to write about. The list is still there, in a notebook, but every month it seems like something HEAVY comes along that demands to be written. Oh, brain. *kicks it*

Thank you for sharing this, a special coming-of-age day, a day you can never prepare for, no matter how hard you try. I love what your husband said too - it was the perfect moment to share that thought, no matter how long he rehearsed it in his head.

I am full of admiration for Alex - to know what you want to do at such a young age is particularly rare, I think - and I wish him all the very best for his future. You obviously raised a wonderful boy and should be congratulated for that. *hugs*
