Fandom: Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Name: Aerie
Canon Point: Just after Irenicus' death
Is this character dead? No
History:
Aerie's personal history.*As her playthrough involved a female Bhaalspawn and left Haer'Dalis behind, she will not have had a relationship.
Game history.*This is only the main plot of the game. Other events are optional and have little bearing on her personality and development beyond leveling up and giving her time to get to know other characters.
Aerie is, throughout the course of gameplay, adopted by the fighter Minsc as his "witch," replacing his former "witch" and lover, Dynaheir, who died in Irenicus' dungeons. What, precisely, this means, however, is a mystery, as Minsc is very much insane. Also, as she continues to adventure with the rest of her party, she becomes quite close to all of its members. The party she adventured with consisted of Minsc, Jaheira (a half-elven druid) and the player character Erlania Amaliar. While she knows other possible party members (Haer'Dalis, Yoshimo, etc.), she does not grow as close to them as she is to Jaheira, Minsc, and the player.
As the game progresses, Aerie grows more and more devoted to her friends, joining the party in their final battle in hell. As there were no evil-aligned characters in her party, she has no quarrels with any of them. Jaheira becomes kind of a role model for her, as she admires the half-elf's strength, Minsc her defender, the player her friend. She is understandably sad to part from them, but does knowing that she has grown for the experience.
Personality: Despite her history as a slave, Aerie is naive and even childish, having limited experience with the big wide world. Her adopted uncle Quayle (a gnome in the circus) kept her sheltered from harm outside of what she already had to endure as a spectacle and a slave. Her age contributes as well--she is very young so far as elf standards go, and has seen little of the world outside of the circus since she was taken from her family as a child. She often notices little things, deemed unimportant by others, but that catch her attention (she mentions once that in a certain light another charater's hair "looks really pretty"), though she has grown somewhat, and does not mention such things out loud as often.
Because of the loss of her wings, Aerie is often subject to bouts of depression and feelings of uselessness--especially when speaking about her past. As a cleric, she worships the gnome god Baervan Wildwanderer as she no longer feels worthy enough to worship her people's goddess Aerdrie Faenya. While she still calles herself "avariel," she tends to feel closer to other races. Still, she is capable of smiling, and often laughs. She does have a sense of humor, and she uses it among her friends, though she is a little leery of strangers at time, even if she makes friends easily. Her sweet nature and willingness to listen to and help with others' problems tends to draw people toward her, though she can be just a little bit much for some. She is a little needy sometimes, and requires reassurances when her mood drops.
Aerie is very caring as well--even to the point of defensive where her friends are concerned. As soft as she is, she can be just as angry and just as vindictive as anyone else (if she does not form a romatic relationship in the game, after the expansion it is mentioned that she spends her life hunting and eradicating slavers), especially if a friend is involved. She is far braver than others often give her credit for and she is quite capable of holding her own in combat situations. She sympathizes with others easily, and is always ready to help.
Despite appearances to the contrary and her sometimes-childish nature, Aerie is not stupid. While many tend to underestimate her intelligence behind her naivete, it is there. She tends to see to the heart of most situations, and she makes relevant analyses and observations when necessary. She knows what is happening, despite what she appears to be.
Aerie is somewhat claustrophobic, though far less so than her winged kin. As she gew up away from other avariel and has been without wings longer than with, she has, for the most part, learned to live with it. She does not like enclosed spaces, but she will enter them if necessary.
Skills | Powers: Aerie is both cleric and mage--gaining holy powers from her patron, Baervan Wildwanderer, and employing magic as well, a rare and strange sort of combination where she comes from.
As a cleric, she focuses most on healing prayers, healng injuries, curing poison and disease, and the like. She can have more offensive spells, calling down her god's power to smite enemies, create spiritual weapons, or summon skeletons, but she tends to gravitate more toward the healing, as her spells are limited, and she is more concerned with her party's well-being. She is more than content to leave the summoning of creatures to Erlania, who is a mage herself.
As a mage, Aerie is very damage-based, rather than support-based. Her spells are mainly centered in fire-magic, and she can throw fire at her opponents in several forms, both explosive and not. However, she can also damage herself and her friends with these spells, and she must be careful where she aims them, or she'll end up healing injuries she herself caused.
Her spells are very limited, however, restricted to a certain number of both clerical and mage skills per day, before she runs low on energy and cannot recite the proper incantations to make them work. She must rest, then, to regain her focus and her spells.
Aerie has some weapon proficiency with quarter staff and sling, but she is primarily a distance fighter. She can wear heavier armor, but it hinders her movement ability and, therefore, her capability to cast mage spells vanishes. She tends to stick to lighter robes and stay far away from melee combat, preferring distance spells to close-range fighting. Furthermore, she is physically frail, owing to her race's hollow bones. While, if she had kept her wings her chest and shoulders would have been stronger, Aerie has no such development and remains small and easily-breakable.
First Person Sample: [It seems that Aerie will never stop being entirely shocked whenever she gets this to do what she wants it to, and her face says it all as she appears in the video.]
Oh!
[Her expression fades into a soft smile, though, as she looks at it. As much as the thing confuses her (it isn't magic making it work), she isn't stupi enough not to realize that it has its uses. Or that people are watching.]
Well, my friends, I think we need a little more excitement!
[Her expression pales a bit as she hurriedly clarifies.]
N-not like what what's been happening! The good kind of excitement!
[She gives a nervous little giggle and a little shift of her eyes as though she's looking for someone who might be watching, but she shakes her head and continues, smiling.]
What do you think we should do? Oh but I do miss my Uncle Quayle! He would have some ideas!
Third Person Sample: Aerie had never been all that fond of ceilings and caves. They blocked the sky, and, as much as she felt unworthy, she was still avariel. She could still feel that primal fear of being closed in, of never seeing sky again, of being locked in darkness forever. She had already been tied to the ground for so long that that part no longer bothered her but...she did so enjoy seeing the sky.
This cave, though, was worse. It reminded her of cages and bars and circuses. Of ruined feathers and broken wings. Things she would rather forget, even if she was reminded every day she woke up without wings.
And now the caves. Some cruel joke, this was.
"Oh, this isn't funny at all! Come out from behind the curtain, everyone. Please?"
Nothing. And the dark seemed like it was creeping, coming closer. And still no one appeared.
"This wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I said I wanted an adventure..." This wasn't even exciting. This was just frightening, with no indication that anything good was coming out of it. She could be brave if she was doing something, but this? She let out a little cry and stumbled a few steps backward as the darkness seemed to shift again, nearly tripping over rocks she hadn't seen, focused as she was on the close damp air in front of her.
"Baervan, watch over me..."
