asadsd this is brilliant and you're the best when it comes to text so to answer your side question: NOPE we never get tired of you talking about text, I love that there are 3 text guides by you and they're all fantastic :>
I love your advice on the font combinations, about the foundation font + fun font. I never really gave much thought to how I combine fonts so the combos can be really random. The way you talk about it with an actual theory is so cool and I need to keep this in mind the next time I want to frustrate myself by using text :p

also the way you used the text to add 'texture' to the background in the example icon is seriously so creative!

can I ask, when you make text icons, do you know it will be a text icon from the start and what the text will be? or do you often just look at an almost finished icon and say 'hmm this needs text' and then decide what it will say?

You are always so sweet and thoughtful with your comments; thank you so much! ♥ ♥

Regarding your question, it tends to be a mix. I really got on board the negative space/removed background thing awhile back after I made an icon resolution to get better at cutting subjects out of their original backgrounds, and I never really got off that train. So a lot of the time I just have all this blank space to fill which is super fun! So for stuff like that there's a good chance I'm adding text to the mix, and in those situations, if I don't already know what the text will be, I usually keep the option open for a while. So I won't stamp any layers or anything so that I can still mess around with the background without going back and adding a million layer masks or whatever.

So icons that started from the beginning with text would be like...

np I always love reading icon rambles!! :>

Mad respect if you actually CAN change text or decide to add text later! The hardest part for me is actually deciding what I want it to read. I'd use text even more if I was better/faster at coming up with good text ideas, but the only thing I know how to use are quotes and they are always so LOOOONG that if I don't base the entire composition around it, I can't get it to fit .___. and even with quotes I always second guess every idea like 'is it totally dumb to write this on this icon? is it necessary? is the connection between the quote and the icon clear enough? WHAT AM I DOING?' so 50% of the time I just leave it out. So even if this might sound really trivial to you, I definitely also admire your ability to come up with text to use in the first place! :)

Thanks for all the extra details, it's always interesting to hear what goes into other makers' iconing process!

i envy people who can use fonts THIS WELL.
it doesn't matter how many times I read a text tutorial I still can't get it to look the way I want it too. but ehi, I'll keep trying, maybe with all these new fonts i'll get something out of it.
text is damn scary for me lol
