This is how the madness starts.
Crocodile tastes the flesh and finds it too sweet-young, lacking the sophistication of a rotting corpse. Not yet the season for this meat and there are other things to feast upon. Wraps it loosely with crinkly paper and sets it next to strawberries turning into dark lumps of bloody bruises.
The decision weighs less than the nearly empty bottles of flat soda, each containing sip's worth of liquid. (Those too, will be saved, for God knows what.) The new prey is spied for a second before it’s too late. The leftover tuna salad vanishes in three bites as the jaws tear the stale bread. Teeth barely bother masticating the yielding food.
Another beer is opened. The cap skids across the table until it’s silenced: hand slapping down hard enough to scatter the loose crime scene photos.
"You're going to get food poisoning one of these days."
The great beast pats its sated stomach, more a cast iron fortress than anything.
“You don’t know what you’re missing.” Dean smiles like a crocodile when he spies the entry in Dad’s journal. “How do we kill it?”
There’s a new hunger gnawing deep, waiting to be satisfied.
