can't you see that we'll collide?

Today I watched a video preview for a new feature of photoshop CS5 ( which, wow; I remember still using version seven not all that long ago ); it was a sneak peek at the new Content Aware tool in photoshop and... I'm definitely of two minds about this. Before I get into it, I will say that I actually wrote this before I realised that the capacity ( Read more... )

This... worries me. Mainly, I really don't like the idea of people who know jack shit about composition fixing up photos (and worse, it would kill me if they get it right) and it bothers me a bit that something that before, was something only people who knew Photoshop could do (and presumably you could do it to a greater and more awesome degree than I can) is now something everyone can do.

But you know what? I think every photo you take is still worth it. Because it's not real unless you put your thought into it. Because people who don't understand art can't compose and balance colours and make their photos speak. Because no matter how far technology changes, if you do not love a photo for a reason you've never loved anything else, if a photo does not speak to you something you know it won't say to anyone else - then it's not your photo anyway. And so, because there is actual meaning in your photography, you still win. ♥

Thanks for sharing this, Cai. I find this topic really really interesting...just last night I was doing a watercolor and I looked at it, and thought..."When I scan that into the computer I can fix the contrast, and that will totally fix the mood I'm going for (without me spending a few more hours messing with the layers by hand, with actual paint)........- nonono, I'll do it now. Bah. I'm not going to cheat ( ... )

see, for me, that's a little different; retoning or adjusting scanned images doesn't feel like cheating, for me. If I finish a sketch in photoshop, it becomes mixed media, for me, and I'd list it as such, if I ever bothered to detail such things. Every photo I've ever printed ( or internet!published ) has been digitally finished, at least in some way or another, but I have never, never just had the computer do something for me ( also I apologise for that really shoddy sample of photos. I am too lazy to upload anything new ).

I've run into people modelling things digitally before and then have them manufactured using various methods of rapid prototyping, which I think is intriguing, but again, it's a league of its own, outside the world of physical sculpting. Anyway.

If you'd like to reblog this, sure! Mostly though, I'm not in much of a writing place at the moment, though if you wanted to... idk, give me a question, or something, I can probably do... that. I'm just... yeah. Really bad at the writing these days.

I really love your photography, Cai. And you're fine at writing. That blog of ours is kind of on the backburner...but it gets a shit ton of views (since November of 2008, over 982 every month) every single day because of something I posted about two years ago, so I feel bad just letting it sit there without occasional new content. If I can think of a topic or a question I'll bug you, but you've got no obligation, do what makes you happy.

However, if you are interested, I would love to pimp you out on our featured artists page, which I have neglected to start, but could. :D

I understand how you feel. Well said. I also happen to agree with you.

As I said elsewhere, looks like a great thing to have if you happen to work in an advertising department and don't already know how to use the clone tool.

I predict a resurgence of traditional arts sometime in the next generation or two. People are going to get tired of digital slickness and remember the skill and tactility of real paints.

God, I hope so anyway.
