About the character
Kanda is an Exorcist of the Black Order, a Catholic organization centered around defeating the Millennium Earl and his Akuma before they destroy the world. Exorcists are their soldiers, who fight with weapons made out of Innocence (holy material said to be from God) that chooses them to be fighters.
Kanda is a little different from the other Exorcists, in that he is a Second Exorcist. They were created from a now ceased project, taking dying or useless Exorcists and moving them from their original bodies into new, artificial ones. These bodies have increased strength, speed, as well as regeneration that seems to be able to put their bodies back together and survive pretty much anything. This results in a tattoo on their chest which grows the more they use it, as a sort of timer for how long they have before their regeneration stops working (this was probably put into place because of the violent rejections from Innocence while they were trying to forcefully resynchronize them). Along with that, the scientists involved in the project also locked away their memories of their first lives and lied to them about what they were (although Kanda comes to recall some of his memories and realize the truth anyway).
As a result of his memories leaking through the seal, he hallucinates lotus flowers everywhere, occasionally sees That Person wandering around and even talking to him (though it's hard to say if her appearance was only whenever he has been in proximity to Alma), and has dreams of small moments from his life before.
Kanda's only friend at the time of the experiments was another experiment named Alma. While initially at odds, the two eventually became friends. Kanda's hallucinations and memories were eventually known to the scientists, who were going to kill him before he went crazy. Alma tries to save him, fails, and then tries again, discovering the truth and going batshit. Kanda recovers from their murder attempt by synchronizing with his Innocence, runs across Marie and saves him from being used as another Second, and finds Alma who's just killed everyone else in the branch. They fight, Kanda deciding to kill Alma so that he could live to find That Person, which devastates him. The project is ended at this point, and Marie and Kanda both return to being Exorcists.
For the next nine years Kanda goes on missions and follows orders, making only a few bonds and keeping on his mind the resolve to find That Person and keep his promise. There was much Kanda fighting like a badass (and being the only one to actually kill a Noah thus far) and then getting put on a bus after the arc was over. Or even sometimes before.
