My count of novels is embarrassingly short this year, a sure sign that I haven't had the attention span required to really get into anything lately. At least that gives me a fairly easy resolution to read more in 2014

Like you, I was somewhat leery of the angel angle, but I liked the book quite a bit. If nothing else, the combination of angels and noir detectives is an original concept!
Also, I think he has a gift for stringing together scientific terms in beautifully descriptive ways. The language he chooses makes for some amazing descriptions, even at times when I only get the science on a superficial level. Like a description of the night sky might include physics terms I couldn't define per se, but the way he writes it is lovely and there is enough context to give the general idea.
All in all, I would say give it a chance--but maybe get it at the library as opposed to buying the hardback, just in case.
I've actually seen the angel/PI angle before, an urban fantasy series called Remy Chandler by Thomas Sniegoski. I don't know how many books there are now, but I stopped at two and it's part of why I was leery of this one. So thank you for your opinion because it certainly has weight. I'll put it on my list then. :)
