hooray! i too am completely mystified by jeanette winterson, and the drawing of rays of sunlight escaping from the seams in her pants. i just don't get it.
While I love her work I do find it quite easy to see why people do despise her. Oranges is rather prosaic by her standards, as it deals more with things that actually happen rather than strange mythopoetic allusions (although they are there a bit later on, but probably not as well integrated as some of her later novels) and oodles of magic realism. I don't know if your objections mean you'll like or hate her later stuff any more, but its all esotericism from here on in :D.
