Skunk smell and rabies vaccinations

Today I was cleaning an animal carrier that previously was used to house a skunk, and now I'm noticing that my clothes stink like skunk!  (I don't actually get to handle skunks yet, because I haven't had rabies shots.)  Any advice on how to get the smell out of my clothing?  I read something about soaking them in tomato sauce, but that doesn't seem ( Read more... )

I read something about soaking them in tomato sauce, but that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense (trade in the stench for stains?).

The theory is its the acid in tomato sauce or juice that cuts through the skunk spray. Skunk spray is pretty oily. I've used it to wash a dog who had to learn the hard way, carefully keeping it out of his eyes, but never on clothes.

Have you tried vinegar? White vinegar is often used to remove stains anyway and I use it a lot for house cleaning. The smell dissipates after awhile. You could soak a clean cloth with vinegar, hold it to the stain and then wash the garment alone or add it to the wash. Might work. Lemon juice might work too.

Good luck.

I was told last week by public health that there is still a shortage and they are saving the vaccines for people who have been bitten. I've had my rabies shots but the veterinarian at the clinic I work at has been trying to get his to no avail, which sucks because our veterinary clinic also handles the rabies and wild animal program for this area.

my dogs got sprayed once. i tried bathing them in all the things that were supposed to work-
tomato juice, baking soda, dawn, and a product called 'skunk-off' that i got from a vet.
and the only thing that worked, was time. :P
