Title: The Hawks Alight 'Til Morning
Fandom: Julius Caesar
Subject: fem!Antony, fem!Cassius, fem!Brutus
Notes: Made for
waywardmixes's Theme #6: Genderbend. Inspired by
Hunger Artists Theater's fantastic all female production of Julius Caesar (which is also what all the pictures are from). If you live near Fullerton, CA and like Shakespeare, you should go check it out.
Wow, this mix was a pain in the ass. I actually had a complete song listing for another mix for this theme (fem!Eddie Dean from the Dark Tower series), but after seeing this production, I had to make a mix for it instead. I'm not really satisfied with the final product, but I got tired of trying to improve it and today is the round's deadline, so. I tried to choose softer/quieter songs for Brutus and Cassius because the production felt very introspective in comparison to other productions/movie adaptations I've seen. (idk if that really makes sense.) And I apologize that Cassius's songs are mostly about Brutus, it just kind of happened. Brutus's songs are all about betrayal/regrets, Antony's are all about revenge, and Cassius is just like Brutus~~~ Anyway, oops, sorry, I swear that there is more to Cassius's character (but there was some serious unrequited love going on in this production and I kind of focused in on that). Fem!Caesar was also supposed to be included in this, but I only had two songs for her, so that kind of flopped.
SO ANYWAYS, I'm rambling mainly because I feel like my song choices are kind of odd this time and don't entirely make sense? So, I have song-by-song explanations at the bottom of this post.
download For those of you who managed to avoid reading Julius Caesar in high school, the play is about the assassination
of Julius Caesar - the events that lead up to it and what follows. The main character of the play - Brutus - is drawn
into the conspiracy against Caesar by his brother-in-law Cassius. The conspiracy is made up of a group of senators
who fear that Caesar will make himself king, turning the Roman republic into a monarchy. After Brutus joins them,
they follow through with their plan to assassinate Caesar. Mark Antony, one of Caesar's friends, delivers an
emotional funeral oration, beginning a riot which leads to the conspirators being driven out of Rome. Mark Antony
joins Octavius, Caesar's nephew/adopted son, to fight against Brutus and Cassius at the Battle of Philippi. During
the first battle, Cassius believes that his best friend Titinius has been captured and commits suicide. Brutus loses
the following battle and commits suicide to avoid capture. Mark Antony and Octavius are victorious.

Maybe Sparrow
Neko Case
maybe sparrow, you should wait
the hawks alight 'til morning

your body limp beneath my feet
your dusty eyes as cold as cane
didn't hear my warning

Samantha Crain
what is it exactly you want from me?
an arm, a leg, my own two feet?
I won't say I'm needy, but I won't say I'm fine
not a meeting of swords or a tie that binds
so can't we just be two troubled souls in need?
and nothing more to speak of, to speak of

Notes on song choices:
(maybe sparrow) Calphuria -> Caesar; Caesar's death
Antony (the sweat descends) "a masker and a reveller" - I just wanted one song to sum up Antony's hedonism since the rest are about revenge (seven months) pretending to accept the necessity of Caesar's assassination (the sweets) first half of the song directed towards Caesar, the second half to the conspirators - I also liked the rising anger in this song (seven nation army) originally, I was going to use Alice Russell's cover here, but decided that Vyvienne Long's cover fit in with the other songs better and I liked the contrast between her soft voice/the harshness of the cello (legions - war) the battle of Philippi
Cassius (glad) Cassius brings Brutus into the conspiracy (in smithereens, the search for affinity) Cassius -> Brutus; the tent scene (dry and dusty) Cassius -> Brutus; reconciliation after the tent scene and their impending failure in battle (her hollow ways) Cassius's suicide
Brutus (hero) betraying Caesar (enjoy the silence) Brutus -> Portia and/or Cassius, your choice (a lily for the spectre) regrets about the assassination; seeing Caesar's ghost (st. francis) and more regrets (before departure) Brutus's final words about friendship before committing suicide
(winter) Caesar's ghost appears to Brutus before Philippi and watches over Cassius's and Brutus's suicides (legions - aftermath) the battle of Philippi is finished
