Deep Space Nine is the third tv series set in the Star Trek universe. It takes place on a space station formerly under control by the Cardassians, who occupied the planet Bajor. After the Bajorans liberate themselves from the Cardassian occupation, their government invites the Federation to administer joint control of the station. Julian Bashir is the station's chief medical officer. He befriends Elim Garak (although he doesn't admit they're friends until this episode), the only Cardassian left on the station, who has been exiled from Cardassia. Garak works on the station as a tailor, but Bashir believes he is a Cardassian spy.
In "The Wire," Garak begins to experience severe headaches, but denies that there is anything wrong and refuses Bashir's help. Bashir discovers the source of the headaches is an implant in Garak's brain designed as an anti-torture device which generates eudorphins. Garak has had the implant turned on for the past two years to cope with the pain of being in exile and the it is now breaking down and could kill Garak. He finally accepts Bashir's help and through the course of the episode, tells him three conflicting stories explaining why he was exiled. With time running out, Bashir travels to Cardissa to see the man who installed the implant and saves Garak.

01 // Quiet the Mind
IAMXlies come, lies they go
(...) you're alive
but you know that the wire
under you is bending
and the truth is always telling you to be
immune to everything
(...) hold back the fear
hold back the darkness
hold back the melancholy
it's a crime

Bashir: Are you all right?
Garak: I'm fine.
Bashir: You don't look fine. Your skin is clammy and your pupils are contracted
Garak: I assure you, I'm in perfect health.

02 // Keep On Lying (Live)
Tame Impalaall I give are little clues
maybe one day I'll get through
but there is nothing I can do
I'll just keep on lying to you
I only need to say it's true
your poor little heart already knew
but there is nothing you can do
I just keep on lying to you

Bashir: ...Garak and I've been having lunch together once a week for more than a year now. You'd think he'd trust me a little.
Dax: Why should he? It's not like you two are really friends.
Bashir: No...of course not.

03 // Two Trees
Foalsdon't let go, just breathe slow
so hold on, it will pass
don't give up, don't let go
grey clouds, they'll break up
rest yourself, rest your head
be still, play dead
learn to acquiesce

Bashir: I'm not going to let you commit suicide. I'm here to help you.
Garak: I doubt you can.

04 // Space Travel is Boring
Sun Kil Moonshe still got plenty lonely, but that's just the case
with time, time, time
started hearing voices sometime in June
she knew she would go crazy, but didn't think that soon
now she doesn't feel lonely, but she'd just as soon
try, try, try, try
(...) I'm shot to the moon
been there half an hour, I want to come home soon

Garak: Living on this station is torture for me, Doctor...One day I decided I couldn't live with it anymore. So I took the pain away.

05 // Twinstar
Veruca Saltyou wanna lift me up
but you don't know and you don't see
I'm stuck in my ways
breathing, when all I want to do is drown
you keep on breathing
and I keep on sinking down

Garak: Has it ever occurred to you that I might be getting what I deserve?
Bashir: No one deserves this.

06 // Everytime
Foalscome right this way, right this way
if you follow, I promise you'll be okay
come this way
be that way, be that way
I want you, I need you to be okay
(...) the lights won't bridge the gap
through that old day
everytime I see you
I want to sail away, sail away

Bashir: Garak, listen to me. Right now I'm not concerned with what you did in the past. I'm not going to walk out of here and let you die.

07 // Night Sight
Airinstrumental

Bashir: If you need to reach me, I'll be here for at least the next twenty-six hours.

08 // Sick as Your Secrets
Veruca Saltsick of the night, sick of the day
sick of the sun that burns you
white-knuckling it, wasting away
color yourself back in again
(...) you're sick of it
you're as sick as your secrets
you're sick of it all

Garak: Look at this place. It's pathetic to think this is what my life has been reduced to. This sterile shell, this prison.

09 // Don't Mess with Latexas
MenomenaI know that I should just confess
but I don't admit to much these days
I was a monster once
but now I'm calm, now I'm tame
(...) you seduced me with your bottle neck
and vapid prose through drunken breath
(...) still your speech is young
your words are wrong
you talk so much, your voice is raw
I'm sure you're sick of sucking up
I'm such a sucker for a sycophant

Bashir: I thought you enjoyed my company.
Garak: I did. That's the worst part. To think that I actually enjoyed eating mediocre food while staring at your smug, sanctimonious face. I hate this place and I hate you.

10 // Mouthful of Diamonds
Phantogramwake up, you're getting high on your own supply
oh baby, you're still alive when you could've died
(...) you've got a mouthful of diamonds
and a pocketful of secrets
I know you're never telling anyone
because the patterns, they control your mind
those patterns take away my time
(...) I wish I could believe, I wish I could believe

Bashir: I've about given up on learning the truth from you, Garak.
Garak: Don't give up now, Doctor. Patience has its rewards.

11 // Crosses
Zero 7 ft. Jose Gonzalesdon't you know that I'll
be around to guide you
through your weakest moments
to leave them behind you
returning nightmares, only shadows
we'll cast some light and you'll be alright
for now

Bashir: I forgive you. For whatever it is you did.
Garak: Thank you, Doctor. That's most kind.

12 // Fade Into You
Mazzy StarI want to hold the hand inside you
I want to take a breath that's true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth
you'll come apart and you'll go blind
(...) fade into you
I think it's strange you never knew
a stranger's light comes on slowly
a stranger's heart without a home

Tain: Strange. I thought you were his friend.
Bashir: I suppose I am.

13 // Theme from the Stars
StarsI saw the sun again
and I was happy to be there
with my one true friend
until the very end
and when the sun had gone
we said goodbye to the day
and then we carried on
we carried on, we carried on

Bashir: You're just going to sit there and pretend that the last ten days never happened?
Garak: I, for one, Doctor, am perfectly satisfied with the way things turned out. And
I see no need to dwell on what was doubtlessly a difficult time for both of us.

14 // I Believe You Liar
Washingtonfrom what we were to what we'll become
and full of hope and electricity
now I let you make a man of me
what can I do? now I am on fire
I believe you, I believe you, I believe you
I believe you, liar

Bashir: ...of all the stories you told me, which
ones were true and which ones weren't?
Garak: My dear doctor, they're all true.
Bashir: Even the lies?
Garak: Especially the lies.
