with one of my ex-roommate's cats, it was hair-ties. Started with just digging them out of the garbage and chasing them around (still had a little bit of snap, and, yes, he did bring it over to play fetch with it.) Eventually, it got so Malcolm would go digging into her bag in the bathroom cabinet and choose which one he liked best for the day. Needless to say, after it had been dropped into his water dish, she wasn't too inclined to have it back.
