Good article!

As this is something that I can closely relate to, can you suggest any examples of positive thoughts in such situations that contrast to not matching up to standards? I think I understand the more generalised concept of being more aware of people appreciating your work over expectations, but I'm very bad at coming up with positive thoughts when alone in general.

(The grammar nazi that I've been carefully cultivating is dying to point out a few typos, but I'll keep quiet :x)

Coming up with positive thoughts on your own is tough. Where do those negative thoughts come from? Are they from early childhood, past relationships, challenging experiences? Try to get at the root of them and confront the reality of your negative self-talk. Rarely are they always true all the time. Find alternative stories to those negative thoughts and see what those unique outcomes to your life mean as well. We are all a mix of good and bad stuff! Live for the glass half full!!!

I suppose they come from all three - mostly regret and disappointment, 'if only I'd done this differently,' 'if only I'd known...' I know that logically there's no way I could have and yet the emotions remain. I've been concentrating lately on trying to take note of all the good things my mind would quietly ignore though :)

Finding Your "Audience of Appreciation" anonymous January 21 2009, 22:24:55 UTC
As a person new to the profession and one who has actually experienced the anxiety before a solo vocal performance, I could not agree more that finding one's "audience of appreciation" would help in issues of esteem, self-assurance and in the strengthening self-worth.
