I've tried explaining this (far less poetically) to people who think you have to live by rules that they, themselves, do not. Usually because they're irked by the complication you're currently providing in their life and they can just assign you a role that is convenient for them. As if you're just some attache to their life and don't have a fully-functioning one of your own.

It is not a real word, so far as I know. What makes a word real though? People using it I suppose...
