“Do something!”

“Do you have any bright ideas?!”

“We’re gonna die at this rate!”

“Commander Spanner, please give us orders!”

“Shut the fuck up already!”

They were too loud. I had been at the bakery to get more bread when Nemesis decided to attack in the vicinity. At the moment, I was trying to usher some of the bakery people away to a safe area, while Avalon agents rushed past with panicked yells. I have no idea what was happening, but it did not appear to be good for our side.

“Keep going that way,” I told the civilians. “You will be away from the battle.”

“Aren’t you coming with us, Madison?” the bakery owner asked, eyes wide in fear.

“Do not worry about me. Just go. Make sure to hide behind the cars and buildings if needed.”

They hesitated but obeyed me a few seconds later. I watched them go before turning to where I could see the action was. Gunfire and explosions were heard and I wondered if I needed to go. Biting my lower lip, I reached into my bag and pulled out my earpiece and tablet, turning both of them on. I pressed a few commands on the tablet to adjust my frequency to be the one the agents were using at the moment.

“-reinforcements! There are too many!”

“Why did they attack here?! This place is full of civilians!”

Jen was the one who answered, as her power meant it was easy for her to hack into the enemy’s communication system. “From what I can tell, they are searching for someone.”

I ducked behind a car when several Avalon agents came running past. Who could they be searching for here? Avalon HQ was on the other side of the city, and most of the agents lived relatively closed to HQ. Was there someone they wished to-

Oh. Right. I lived near here. I ran a hand through my hair, wondering what to do. I really did not want to get captured again, but it seemed that Nemesis really wanted me, judging from the numbers they had brought. I could try to get their attention away, but my superiors would not be happy about that.

“They are searching for Commander Fuujima,” Jen said, cutting through my thoughts. “Make sure they do not succeed.”

“Do we even know where she is? What if she’s not home?” That was Drew.

“She’s close by. Commander Fuujima, you were not supposed to access the network until you were declared fit to be on duty.”

As expected of Jen. There were surprised yells when they heard my voice. “They can scold me later. I am one block to the east from my apartment complex.”

“Understood. I don’t need to send escorts to get you out of here, right?”

“Of course not. Are we still outnumbered?”

“Yes!” Drew interrupted. She sounded out of breath. “That sword-wielding bastard is here too! He’s too fast for me!”

“I thought Jace normally fought against him,” I commented, worried.

“That string-manipulating bitch, Maria, took a liking to Jace so she went after him. And Undine is here so Vince decided to go after her instead. So I got stuck with this bastard.” Drew, as I had learned early on, did not care for using last names to address others when on a mission. ”Jace, can I switch with you?”

”Okay.” Jace’s voice was calm, although I could detect him breathing harder than usual. “I’ll lure her to you.”

“Thank you!”

I typed a quick message as I hurried down the street away from the fight. To think that three of Nemesis’ generals would be dispatched just to capture me… I felt strangely flattered that they believed they needed that much firepower to subdue me.

“Li disappeared,” Jace informed. Drew cursed rather loudly, causing Vincent to scold her.

“Commander, he’s heading right towards you! ETA one minute!” Jen exclaimed, panicking. “You need to hurry away!”

How did he-no, it did not matter. I had to hurry, to buy some time before reinforcements arrived. Breathing deeply, I sped up, using the wind to help. I received a notification for a message and I quickly opened it, hoping it was good news.

We will arrive in three minutes, twenty seconds.

“Last for four minutes longer,” I ordered. “I cannot outrun Li so I will do what I can to distract him. Jason, go clear out the foot soldiers before joining Wu in taking down Barton.”

“Hey, I am the field commander here!” Spanner exclaimed. There was a beat before he continued, “Do what Fuujima just said.”

There was laughter and it helped dispel the somber air. Noah decided to tackle me to the ground right then and I let out a surprised yell.

“Gotcha~” he sang, looking down at me as he pinned me to the ground.

“Maddy, are you okay?!”

“Commander!”

I turned off the earpiece, knowing that this conversation should not be on record. “That hurt.”

“Sorry.” He smiled sheepishly. “You know we’re looking for you, right?”

“I am well aware of the fact,” I said with a sigh. “I was trying to leave. You sort of stopped that plan when you tackled me to the ground.”

“Sorry. Again. But, um, I had to tell you that Avalon’s greatly outnumbered and you guys need to call for a retreat soon or else it’ll be even more of a bloodbath. Remember Maria?”

“That teenage girl who has a huge crush on you and murdered me?”

“Yeah, her. She sorta wants to massacre everyone here so…” He shrugged as he moved to get off me. “I figured you wouldn’t be very happy about that, which is why I’m giving you a warning.”

“You are very considerate.” I accepted the hand he gave me and pulled myself up, glancing at my watch. “It will be fine. Reinforcements have arrived.”

He blinked. “Reinforcements?”

I typed away on my tablet, turning my earpiece back on but making it so it was one way only. I then switched it to speaker so Noah could hear as well.

“-ly shit, who are-”

“Alright, you weaklings. Time to let us grown-ups handle this.”

“Who are you calling we-”

“Ah, ah, ah. Hush, dear.”

Drew growled at being interrupted. It seemed like all fighting had come to a halt, judging from the lack of noise.

“Who…are you?” Jen asked cautiously. “How did you manage to get into this frequency? It’s protected.”

“Who we are is not important. How we did that is also not important. All you need to know is that we are here to help you.”

“I am not sure we can trust-”

“Hey, we just saved your asses. If that doesn’t show you we’re on your side, then-”

A far-off voice was picked up, sounding very angry. “EXCUSE ME BUT WE’RE STILL HERE, YOU KNOW!”

“Shut the fuck up, girlie.”

“Yeah, you’re not in this conversation.”

“MY NAME IS MARIA BARTON, NOT ‘GIRLIE’!”

“…what?” Noah looked at me with a raised eyebrow.

I smiled. “I did tell you that I was in charge of another group of people, right?”
