A year had almost passed since I was marked by Death. Lying on my back on the sofa, I stared at my hand as I held it up against the light. With a heavy sigh, I covered my face with my arm.
I heard the door open. “I’m home.”
I sat up, leaning against the back of the sofa. “Welcome home.”
“Eh?” He blinked, confused and surprised. “Maddy, I thought you had to report in today.”
“My superiors decided to place me under house arrest after finding out that Nemesis wants me.” That was a week ago. I was getting bored and restless. “What did you buy?”
He went to set the bags on the kitchen counter. “Nothing much. You mentioned needing more of those cakes and milk and eggs, so…”
He proceeded to put everything away to where they were to go. I watched him, resting my head on my palm.
“…do you have to watch me?” he whined after he was finished, turning to me with a slight red face. “It’s weird.”
“Do you want to go to the amusement park?” I asked. “I can sneak out.”
He blinked before chuckling, ruffling my hair. “Sick of being inside?”
“A little. And it has been a while since we went on a date,” I said with a shrug. He sighed.
“I don’t think it’s safe for you,” he stated. “Lustrei really wants you for some reason.”
“Can you not find out why?” I asked, deciding to go back to the sofa. I sat down and grabbed my tablet from the table.
He sounded hesitant as he came to join me. “Maybe… I just have to play my cards right. He trusts me, I think.”
I rested my head on the back of the sofa. “I am simply tired of this. I have one more year until the deadline, and I cannot do what I want to do if I am confined to my home.”
He kissed the top of my head. “Don’t worry about it. So, how will you be sneaking out?”
I looked at him, surprised. I would have thought he would be all for me staying inside, seeing how he did not want to see me captured again. “Really? You sure?”
He glanced at his phone. “It’s barely noon, and I don’t have to report in until tonight.” He smiled widely. “So let’s go on a date.”
“We do not have to…” I had said I wanted to go outside, but there would be questions if we were spotted together.
“Nonsense. It’s clear you are unhappy and as your boyfriend, I’m supposed to make sure you’re happy.” He stood up and grinned at me. “So let’s go.”
“I do not think that is all what a boyfriend is supposed to do,” I said with a laugh. “But really, it is alright. We can stay in here. We can cook lunch and play games and watch movies and such.”
“If you say so, Maddy,” he said, giving me a suspicious look. I did my best to look innocent, which is not exactly my forte. “So, what should we make for lunch?”
“I want to try making okonomiyaki,” I answered, following him to the kitchen.
“Oh! Oh! Can we make brownies? I really want some.”
“Sure.” As I opened the drawers for chopsticks and a bowl, I pointed at the fridge, smiling. “But first, I need some cabbages.”
