Etou... Hello, everyone. It's Sakura Kinomoto, and I was wondering if the school has a track team to join. Or a cheer-leading squad, that would be a lot of fun too! And if either is accepting new members! Oh, and where to sign up!

[She shuffles around some papers, reading over her notes quickly before she looks back up at the screen.] And also, I ( Read more... )

Hi, Sakura! It's nice to meet you. My name's Danni. I can't really help you with the first one, but I grew up speaking English so I'll do my best to help you with it.

Thank you very much, Danni-San! That would be great!

[She smiles broadly, and for a little bit you almost think this is going to be innocent.

Then she looks at the sheet and starts reading things out with a perfectly straight face. As if she really doesn't know what any of it means.]

Let's see... 'Goddamn it', 'hot commodity', 'hips don't lie', anou... 'Fruity Fella Lumps'?

You're welcome, sweetheart! [The smile is less and less genuine and her eyes get wider and wider as Sakura lists the phrases off.]

Well, um... if you say something's a "hot commodity", that means that it's really popular and everyone wants it. Do you understand that one?

[She nods, okay that's simple enough. She writes it down, happier now that she understands at least one of the new phrases.]

Great! And, well... [She winces; cursing when she doesn't "have" to makes her feel gross.] "Goddamn it" is a swear word. Some people say it when they're really mad, but it's not something you should say. [Not cute little girls, certainly.]

O-Oh, okay... [She nods again and writes down 'do not say', starting to go a little red. Apparently she at least realized that it was a bad thing to say.]

It's okay! I think you should have your English teacher explain the other ones to you, though...

Uhm, okay... [Oh god what else did what she heard mean.]

Don't worry about it, sometimes mistakes happen. It's better you asked!

You speak really good English, Sakura. I'm impressed.

Thank you very much, Danni-San... But I should still learn more so I don't make mistakes like that again.

[That was embarrassing.]

You'll be speaking English all the time here, and that's the best way to learn more! And you know that if you don't know what something means, you should ask instead of just say it. That's really smart.

And, um... I have a question for you, too!

Of course! What is it?

[She really hopes this isn't offensive, but maybe it'll make Sakura feel more comfortable!] There was a Japanese girl at my ballet school when I was like your age [which she thinks is nine] and she called a lot of people "Somebody-san" and "Somebody-chan" like you do. What do those mean?

Uh... Let's see... [She's trying to ponder in English to help her practice, but after a moment she nods.] It's kind of like... -San is kind of like how you refer to someone as Mister and Miss, it's mostly to be polite. -Chan and -Kun are if you're closer to someone, like if they're your friend!

Oh, I see, and it's easier to just do it in Japanese because you're used to it.
