Prologue:
Sungmin’s Fair brown eyes scanned the top drawer of the shelf, careful not to miss anything. His hand went to the pen tucked behind his left ear as he started to write things on a small clipboard. Once that was done he went over to the storage room to arrange stock and start his inventory all over again. His sweat trickled down his chin freely by the time he was finished but never did that small smile leave his face.
He was just about to go to the kitchens to finish what should be left of the dishes when the door suddenly opened, nearly making him jump.
“What are you-oh! Sungmin! Are you done with the inventory?” it was Key, his boss and old friend.
“Yes” Sungmin answered brightly “Just about to start with the kitchens too”
The man shook his head gently, “Sorry if you had to do all the work today, Taemin is going to receive and earful of scolding when he gets back here”
He merely smiled “Don’t be too hard on him hyung. It’s alright, besides, I also needed the overtime so there’s no harm done”
At that, Key sent him a searching look, “Is the landlady raising your rent again?” he asked kindly.
Sungmin shrugged “Can’t blame her, it is hard to get by nowadays…but it’s alright, I can manage this month”
“You know if you need a raise--”
“No” he said flatly. “we already talked about this. I will be paid as I work Key hyung, I don’t want you to think I’m taking advantage of you”
Key wanted to say something but held it in, and instead he had to smile at this display of honesty from the young man. Maybe next time, because when he had that face on, Sungmin can never be persuaded. “Fine, then I’m just going to make you work hard, won’t I?”
“Yep” was the grinned reply.
Key chuckled, unable to feel a little guilty and sad for his friend. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Sungmin--”
“It’s fine Key, I’m fine”
He found himself sighing inwardly, h didn’t know if Sungmin was too proud to ask others for help or that he didn’t want to he a bother to anyone. Knowing the man he knew it was more of the latter but right now he wasn’t sure if that was really a good or a bad thing.
“Don’t be such a worrywart” he heard him joke beside him “You’re growing to grow wrinkles at an early age”
He gasped at that “I am not!” he retorted at once.
Sungmin laughed at that “So stop worrying already” he said, patting him on the back before heading to the kitchen to start his next work.
And Key was left shaking his head behind him, calling out “Don’ forget to rest when you’re finished!”

Sungmin smiled to himself softly, very much touched at the thought of Key looking after him that much, but being the person he was, he couldn’t bear that anyone was having trouble because of him. it already happened before, there was no way he was letting it happen again.
He sighed as he started to wash the plates. The actual truth of the matter was, he was tired, very tired in fact, having to juggle school and his jobs, but he knew if he stopped now it would be more of a burden to him, and possibly to those around him, so he didn’t dare stop from that routine. Going to school in the morning, work at the evenings, then to his apartment where he lived alone, going only to the market when he needed it, it was his daily lifecycle.
At home he also had no one, his parent died when he was young and his younger brother…died a few years back. He was alone in this world, with nothing but a few friends he was scared of getting too close to, least they would leave him as well. Sungmin hated goodbyes. Hated them so much he haven’t used that word in years…ever since that day.
But despite everything else, Sungmin is actually a cheerful, fun loving guy. He likes to joke and do random things. He laughs and smiles a lot, and never did he complain about anything he is doing or had to do. While some of those who knew about his past would think him strange for acting so happy, he would just shrug it off. Call it defense mechanism but this is how he is.
Smiling softly as he polished off the last piece of the china and placing it to its rightful place he looked around for anything else he should do before he gets off. He usually gets all of the kitchen duty but since Taemin isn’t here he figured he should be doing all of the younger’s job.
He grabbed a mop and was about to start on the floor when he heard Key again.
“Sungmin? What are you still doing?” even without looking at he could already sense the frown on Key’s usually calm face.
“Uh…Cleaning?” he said, trying to sound as-a-matter-of-factly.
“Not anymore tonight you’re not” Key crossed his arms and stared at him “Have you even checked the time?”
…time? Sungmin’s eyebrows furrowed a little, he shook his head “No, but-“
“It’s already past midnight” the man said “Don’t you have classes tomorrow?”
His eyes widened “Midnight?” he gaped, turning to the clock. Key was right, how on earth did he forget?? “I forgot about the time” he groaned, feeling the great urge to smack himself on the head.
“Clearly” Key smiled but understood “Good thing I checked on you”
So after a hurried apology Sungmin went off to get ready to leave, wherein Key looked at him as if having second thoughts about him leaving. “I you sure you can go alone? It’s already this late and---”
Sungmin smiled “I’m fine, I’m not a little kid anymore” he reminded him.
“Yes, but you’re not used to being out this late either”
He shrugged, point taken “My apartment isn’t that far, I think I can manage to go home without getting attacked by vampires” he said jokingly.
Key’s eyes narrowed “Very funny, Sungmin”
“Relax Key hyung” he said “You know here’s no such things as vampires. Anyway, I better be going before I become more late. See you tomorrow!”
“Fine! Be careful on your way!”
“I will!” with one last wave, Sungmin went out the door, bowing slightly to apologize as he bumped into Jonghyun by the door then continuing to go his way.
Key was shaking his head as he stared at the door when the younger boy had disappeared into “You had to joke about vampires…of all things” he scoffed.
“Who’s joking about vampires?” a pair of arms slipped around his waist and he looked up to find his lover behind him.
“Hey” with a smile he kissed the man softly on the lips and relaxed in his arms “You’re early tonight”
Jonghyun shrugged “Finished the job early” he said, burrowing his face on the crook of Key’s neck, inhaling his scent “But I see that kid ended up rather late”
He nodded “Taemin didn’t show up today so I had to give him the overtime, I didn’t expect it to end this late though, I hope he gets home okay”
“You’re too worried about him” the older whispered, unable to hide the hint of jealousy in his voice.
At which Key quickly hugged him tighter “That kid is like a little brother to me, and you know what happened to him right?”
Jonghyun nodded gently.
“That’s why I can’t help but worry, he was like me before I had you…” their eyes met, talking on their own.
“He’ll be fine, he’s got you. And you got me”
Key smiled at his lover “I know, but since he’s not here anymore…” his eyes glinted as he pulled his lover closer, arms going around is neck.
And Jonghyun smiled, ah, this was exactly the reason why he made sure to finish his work early today, as he pulled Key close and ravished his mouth excitedly.

It was a clod evening, and Sungmin pulled his jacket closer to himself as a wave of clod wind caused him to shiver slightly. He looked around, the road was practically deserted, and he could only guess it was because it was well into the evening, ignoring the fear that was slowly creeping up his legs.
He was usually home buy 10 pm, so it was his first time to be out this late, and to feel a little scared was to be expected, but he tried his best not to show it as his foot stepped one over the other.
And for someone who had a talent for inviting danger Sungmin should’ve known he was more likely to attract trouble at this time as well.
By the time he realized he was being followed, he was already surrounded by thugs …well, they don’t look like thugs but clearly very dangerous men, 5 of them, and they were starting to circle around him like some sort of predator.
“Well, well, well. Look at what we have here” one of them said, eyes running up and down Sungmin with a very much evil smirk.
Sungmin was scared, but he tried to keep his voice steady “Please, I don’t want trouble” he tried to meet their eyes but failed.
“Trouble? Oh no no no, you are most definitely not trouble young one, as a matter of fact, you saved us from the trouble”
“Yeah” the one with reddish air agreed, as they were inching closer “Who would’ve thought our prey would be the one to come to us”
“P-Prey?” the boy stuttered, a bit confused but even more terrified. He tried to back away but there was nowhere for him to run.
One of them chuckled “Oh? It seems like this one has no idea what we are talking about…” he said to his companions.
“He’s a pure human then?” the other said, looking very interested in Sungmin now. “It’s been a while since we had a real pure human hadn’t we?”
Sungmin was way more confused now…what are they talking about? “What do you?”
“You don’t know hat we are, do you?” the first man said, looking particularly unnerving in front of him.
he had the urge to say something sarcastic, but the fear held his tongue.
“Then let me show you what you’re dealing with” just like that, all 5 men’s eyes started to glow red as they opened their mouths to reveal the fangs that suddenly elongated from their canines.
Sungmin’s eyes widened and a gasp escaped from his lips, his first thought was to deny any of this…that this was some sort of of messed up horrible nightmare that isn’t true, but as his head was painfully yanked backwards by one of the men he knew this was real.
“Oh god” he felt himself whimper in disbelief as the vampires surrounded him, licking their lips maliciously.
“Did you know that not only blood excites vampires?” the man-vampire holding him from behind whispered in his ear, one arm snaking around his waist, to Sungmin’s horror.
“No...Please…Please…Don’t” he whispered, shivering. The man forced his head to the side, making his neck a prominent view to him and the others as his mind reeled in terror “Please…Please”
“Your blood smells bloody fantastic…don’t worry, it’ll be over soon” Sungmin bolted when he felt a wet sensation on his neck, the man licking it and he couldn’t move in horror as he watched those fangs lower themselves, ready to pierce his skin.
“Oh God, Someone, help me”
Then quite suddenly, the hands holding Sungmin on the hair and waist was gone, he fell forward to the ground as he saw the 5 vampires thrown a good few feet away from him.
“W-What--” he wasn’t even able to finish the sentence when he saw a shadow ahead looking forward he saw another man, vampire…and he was looking at the other vampires angrily.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” his voice, while sounding so low, was echoing ang fierce “Attacking a human, on my territory?!”
The newly arrived vampire was evidently younger and smaller in built than any of the men in the vampire group, but when they saw him they bowed down at once.
“Please, forgive us! We weren’t attacking him! we were--” their leader tried to explain but a hiss from the other and he felt silent.
“NOT ATTACKING HIM?! if I hadn’t arrived you would’ve bitten him by now!”
“Master Kyuhyun… please…please…” the man pleaded.
“Get out of my sight!” the man called Kyuhyun ordered. “And never let me see any of you ever again!”
The men didn’t need telling twice, they disappeared before Sungmin could even blink.
“Ignorant fools” Kyuhyun whispered angrily then turned to the young man on the pavement. “Are you alright?”
“I…I’m fine” Sungmin heard himself say. Curiously, all the fear he had been feeling earlier was gone, although he did feel a bit shaken. “T-Thank you…”
“You shouldn’t be running alone this late at night human” the man’s golden brown robs met his own, and he found himself blushing.
“I-I’m sorry…”
“You--”
Suddenly there was a loud noise as another man…well, clearly, he too was a vampire, appeared next to them “Are they gone?” he asked Kyuhyun.
“You’re late, Hankyung hyung”
Hankyung shrugged. “I was sure you wouldn’t even need my help, and I was right” he smiled “What did you do with them?”
“Banished them”
“What?” the red eyed man sounded surprised and a bit disappointed. “Really? Normally you would’ve just disposed of them”
“They still have the hunters to do that to them. I don’t want Leeteuk hyung to scold me again with how I use my powers” Kyuhyun gritted out]
“That’s true”
Sungmin watched them talked a bit more, he had no idea what they were talking about, and to be honest he couldn’t even care. His head was spinning and he felt so weak, all he wanted was to go home and sleep…and never think about this ever again.
“What about him?” the older vampire asked.
“I arrived just in time, he’s unharmed”
“Good, I don’t want the association harping on us again, Hyuk and Hae got us covered with that”
“Something’s odd about him though”
“Odd? What do you mean?”
“Not sure but---” Kyuhyun wasn’t able to finish the sentence as his quick eye and reflexes made him catch Sungmin as the boy fell forward, unconscious.
“Nice Catch” Hankyung said, with a smile.
“Shut up” the younger retorted, picking Sungmin up bridal style “He’s just lucky he’s not hurt”
“Lucky you’re there, you mean?”
“What are you implying hyung?”
“Oh nothing, nothing at all”
Kyuhyun glared, but as they made their way, he felt a swelling sensation in his chest that the man wasn’t hurt after all…
“Rest well, Sungmin”
