A/n: So the other day we went to ride on a train (and my sister and I were resisting the urge to dance bonamana and rainism on it), and although it’s not really my first time on one, my mind went and babbled this story.
-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-
Cho Kyuhyun hated trains. He didn’t hate it hate it, but if he would be asked, he would rather get on any trains. He could blame it on an incident when he was younger where he had gotten lost on the local train station back home, but he’d rather say the fact that train rides, while being fast, are entirely uncomfortable, with the curves and the occasional bumps and everything.
Unfortunately, when he stepped into college, he had no choice but to take the train ride every day, because it was the only less than tiring way to go to his school, as he told himself it would be a waste of time to go ride the bus and walk 30 minutes to school every day if he can take a 15 minute ride using the subway.
The only consolation he had is he didn’t have to ride the train during rush hours, meaning he wouldn’t have to compete with a lot of people for the ride, and he could just stare aimlessly at the darkness of the tunnels or at the more than a few people that he gets on with.
Now, someone once said that trains are a place where the different kinds of people can be seen, and he couldn’t have been more right, Kyuhyun thought, because he can certainly testify to it. He had seen a lot of faces on this train, faces he would never remember and some he would never care about, although some of those might have become familiar because of the time he gets on, Kyuhyun never really paid that much attention because in his proper state of mind, he would never really know these people.
Until Kyuhyun saw him.
He didn’t know his name, but Kyuhyun remembered that he would always be in the last train ride like him, and would be seated in the end of the last train cart, and that he would always be reading a book. He didn’t know exactly what made him curious about him, he could only note he was probably older than him, based on the way he would always be dressed, but soon enough he found himself glancing more than once to the man’s usual seat, staring at the way he would read his book, smiling quite a few times at something he probably read, or at the way he would look when he would sometimes fall asleep while reading. Once or twice he would catch himself staring too much and would mentally scold himself for doing so, because not was he acting like some sort of creeper, but because sometimes he and the man would meet each other’s eyes, and every time that happens, Kyuhyun finds himself averting his gaze, wherein after his ears would be as red as some freshly ripe tomato.
He never knew where he gets off or on either, because when Kyuhyun reaches his station, the man would always still be there, and when he gets on, he would be already there, reading away or sometimes just looking outside the window with a dreamy look in his eyes that it was no secret that he was daydreaming.
Kyuhyun wanted to talk to him, for reason he could not explain why, but always restrained himself because he had no reason for doing so, and he didn’t want the man to think of him as creep because he certainly was not, and talking to someone suddenly without a reason is the number one on the ways on how to consider someone a as such. He waited for opportunities to do so but it just never came, and after a while Kyuhyun just became contented with his one-sided crush.
But good things comes to those who wait, as finally, one night, Kyuhyun finally got to know his name.
It was like a usual night, except that the train was a bit bumpy and creaky because the last train sent out was the oldest cart, and Kyuhyun was in his almost every day seat of a few feet away where he could effectively glance at the man without being noticed, when suddenly, the train gave a particularly ugly lurch forward, and most of the passengers were nearly thrown ahead. Kyuhyun, who luckily grasped the hand rails in time, managed to catch himself, and looking down, he saw a book beneath him that wasn’t there before, he picked it up and was about to look around when…
“Excuse me”
He turned and was about to ask when he stopped dead, because he found himself staring at HIM.
“Erm…” he stuttered, suddenly feeling panicky. Suddenly it was like he didn’t know how to talk. Damn it Cho Kyuhyun, aren’t you the smartest man in school? Why are you feeling like an idiot now? He scolded himself. “Hi?” the tried before wanting to slap himself right in the face for saying something stupid.
The man smiled at him, and Kyuhyun swore he felt suddenly dizzy. “Hello, I believe you have my book, can I have it back?” he asked, his voice was just as melodic and as pleasing as he thought it would be.
Kyuhyun’s brain momentarily stopped functioning, as he stared at him confusedly “Book?” he said, probably looking like the stupidest person in the world.
At this, the man chuckled, and Kyuhyun blushed openly, feeling butterflies at the pit of his stomach as he wondered why the man was laughing at him. But the man wasn’t mocking him, instead, he smiled kindly and nodded, pointing to the object he held in his hands “Yes, my book. I dropped it when the train pressed forward” he explained “Can I have it back please?”
Kyuhyun looked into the book in his hand, and suddenly everything made sense again. “O-Of course!” he said at once, wanting to shrink into a corner for making such a fool of himself “Sorry, Please take it back” he said. Ugh, way to go Kyuhyun, it’s your first talking to him, and you have successfully made a completely idiotic first impression.
“Thank you” The man said, getting the book from him and their skins barely but almost touched, Kyuhyun was resisting more urge to blush as he looked down in an attempt to save whatever could be of his pride and shame. “I’m Sungmin…Lee Sungmin” he said, softly, still smiling.
Kyuhyun, who could tell his mind was on the verge of malfunctioning again, cleared his throat, and tried to look at least normal “uhm…Kyuhyun, Cho Kyuhyun” he said back, and not even in one of the tones he had been practicing in his head for over a million times before if he ever did get to know the man’s name. He tried to smile back, but he felt as if his face was made of rubber.
For the third time he had been rendered speechless as the man nodded and smiled at him again “Okay then, thank you Kyuhyun” he said before going back to his usual sitting place, leaving Kyuhyun to finally process what had just transpired.
And it actually took the supposed to be logic and math genius to finally figure out that… “H-He told me his name?” he whispered to himself in awe.
Lee Sungmin. Sungmin. Kyuhyun repeated in his head, over and over as if he was afraid he would forget the name. He smiled and hummed happily to himself. Sungmin. He finally knew the man’s name!
“Did you finally get laid?”
Kyuhyun choked on his drink. It was lunch, and he was in the cafeteria eating. He looked around quickly before fixing the new comer a glare “What the hell, Mi? Where did that come from?”
His best friend Zhou Mi stared at him “So you didn’t get laid last night?” he asked again, looking quite disappointed.
“No, I didn’t” he answered. “What the hell made you think I’d go and get---” he shook his head, he didn’t even want to think about where Zhou Mi gets his ideas.
The tall diva crossed his arms and stared at him “You could’ve fooled me” he smirked “I certainly remember how I looked the next day after me and Henry--”
“Shut Up Mi” he interrupted, shaking his head, now he was going to have to get that innuendo out of his mind, thanks to Zhou Mi.
Zhou Mi shrugged, before staring at his seriously “So you really didn’t get---?”
He sighed, is that all Zhou Mi could ever think about? He should seriously advice him and Henry to stop doing it all the time for crying out loud. “No Mi, I didn’t” he said.
“Then you finally got a boyfriend?” he then asked, smirking slightly.
“Of course not! Why would I…boyfriend?” he frowned.
Zhou Mi rolled his eyes “Oh please, don’t even think I don’t know about this things Kui Xian. I haven’t been your best friend for years for nothing you know” he said
Kyuhyun glared at him, of course Zhou Mi would know, he probably knows every damn thing in school. “And I wonder how I am still your friend”
The other gasped and mimicked looking hurt “That’s mean Gege!” then he looked at Kyuhyun from head to toe “Although if you just accept my wardrobe advices then-“ the man stopped short after seeing the look on Kyuhyun’s face. “Fine, then I’m going to assume you finally talked to your mystery train man then”
Zhou Mi smirked triumphantly at the look Kyuhyun was now giving him, nodding “Ah, I am right then”
“How did you---hey, he’s no mystery train man!” Kyuhyun retorted, “Mi! Are you some kind of a stalker or something?”
Zhou Mi fixed him a disapproving stare “I am not the one who steals glances from someone you see on a train, Kui Xian. And you call me a stalker”
He blushed, okay, Zhou Mi really knows every freaking damn thing happening in the world. “How did you---??” he stuttered.
“I have my ways” he smirked, eyes glinting evilly “So? What happened? Are you going to tell me or should I just find other sources instead?”
“Why the hell would I tell you?”
“Because I’m going to find out anyway” Kyuhyun glared, as cunning and snarky as he already was, Zhou Mi always finds a way to outsmart him. Damn bastard.
“Fine” he surrenders, figuring that there was nothing he could do anyway, he told Zhou Mi about how he finally got the man’s name, and as he did, couldn’t help but smile to himself, like some weird love struck high school girl.
He raised an eyebrow when he looked at Zhou Mi after he finished, “W-What?”
“I seriously want to hit you” he said to him, frowning “That’s it? You didn’t talk to him anymore after that?”
“Well, there was no reason to anymore---” he stopped as Zhou Mi suddenly looked angry at him “What?”
“I swear, for a genius, you are really stupid!” he said, huffing. “Didn’t you think that him letting you know his name shows that he’s interested in you?”
“He is?” Kyuhyun never really thought about that possibility, could he really think that Sungmin wanted to know him too?
Zhou Mi just rolled his eyes “Seriously…”
“Hey, How was I supposed to know?” he says defensively “I’m already so happy just after knowing his name I couldn’t even think!”
“Kui Xian is in love!!” Mimi blurts out suddenly, and Kyuhyun had to evade the incoming hug from the man.
“W-What? No I’m not! I just like him Mi!” he retorts.
“Geez, why must you always oppose what I say? I have experience in these things! Trust me, you are already in love with him!” Zhou Mi says happily.
Later that day, Zhou mi’s words kept echoing in his mind, it could be possible right? He could really be in love with Sungmin. Of course, there’s just one way to prove it, he told himself as he waited for the last train to arrive, feeling his heart swell with the thought of seeing Sungmin again.
Sure enough, Sungmin was in usual seat, reading a book like usual. Kyuhyun sat in usual seat, staring at him in secret, he wanted to go in and talk to him, but what would he say? What if Sungmin wasn’t interested in him?
But just when he was about to make up his mind of going to Sungmin, all of a sudden, 3 men walked past him, Kyuhyun wouldn’t have minded but there was something in the way the first guy looked that he didn’t like.
And he was right.
The man walked up to where Sungmin was seated, stopping right in front of the reading man “Hello Min” he said, with a sneer.
Sungmin looked up at him, before glancing back down his book “Siwon” he said, coldly. Obviously he knew the man, but didn’t like him, based on the look and tone he used.
The man named Siwon frowned, obviously he didn’t like the way he was treated. He snapped the book Sungmin was reading shut “I’m talking to you, so look at me” he smirked “Or did you manage to have some pride now that you don’t work as a slut anymore?”
Sungmin opened his mouth to say something, but his voice drowned out by someone else “You watch your mouth!”
Before Kyuhyun could stop himself, he had already stood up and went to Sungmin, slapping Siwon’s hand away. He never remembered being as angry he did right now. He stood in front of the man, since he was almost as tall as Siwon; the man seemed unnerved at his presence.
There was a pause, until Siwon laughed and looked at Kyuhyun then to Sungmin who seemed surprised at the man’s presence “Well who is this, don’t tell me this is your new toy? I thought you’d have better taste in men Sungmin” he laughed, along with his men.
Kyuhyun was shaking, his fist was clenched and his teeth gritted. He wasn’t really very athletic but you can’t be a lord of war craft before taking a few lessons in violence. “Leave him alone” he growled.
“I don’t think I will” Siwon answered “You see Sungmin is my slut, and I’m just here to make him what he does best”
“Don’t talk about Sungmin like that!” Kyuhyun shouted, not even caring that the other passengers are staring at their direction now. Sungmin stood up and shook his head gently
“Kyuhyun---” he tried to say.
“You’re pretty brave Kid” Siwon said “You don’t even know him at all…”
“I know him well enough to know that he doesn’t deserve this kind of treatment, especially from a scumbag like you” he said, and somehow, that ignited the first punch.
Kyuhyun didn’t know exactly what happened after that, he just knew Siwon had punched him and he punched back, and they rolled over the floor exchanging blows. The man had told his men to help him, but Sungmin had held them off, and that was the last he remembered before Siwon had hit his head on the metal frame that had made him pass out.
“Kyuhyun…Kyuhyun…”
A voice called him, sounding so sweet and rich in his ears. He was floating somewhere…wait, wasn’t he inside the train?
“Kyuhyun, wake up…Kyu~” the worried voice said, Kyu? Who called him Kyu? It was weird, but cute…he wondered if Sungmin would ever call him Kyu…
Sungmin?
Sungmin!
Kyuhyun snapped awake, groaning because the smallest of movements made his body throb even more than it did just lying down. He tried to look around, what happened?
Sungmin’s face suddenly swam into his focus, looking worried “Kyuhyun, oh finally” he said weakly, he seemed like he was about to cry. Out of instinct he brushed them tears away as he tried to get up with Sungmin’s help.
“Don’t cry-ow” he hissed, and then he looked around again “What happened? Where’s the guy harassing you?”
Sungmin smiled gently “They already left” he looked at Kyuhyun’s cut lip and slowly darkening bruises before saying “I’m sorry, you got hurt because of me” he said sadly.
He shook his head “It’s not your fault” he whispered, and he meant every word of it “I’m glad you’re not hurt”
Maybe it was just the pain he was feeling now that Kyuhyun was able to say those words, and after that he realized what he just said and blushed, “Well, that’s…I mean…”
“Thank you Kyuhyun” Sungmin said sincerely, making Kyuhyun blush even more. “Would you like to go with me for a while? I need to take responsibility for your cuts, and we’ve already missed your stop”
“No, that’s okay, you don’t need to and---you know where I get off?” he stuttered, a bit surprised and overwhelmed at the same time.
Sungmin blushed a bit, nodding “Well, you always get off before I do, and---” he trailed off, looking ashamed.
Then they just bursted out laughing like they knew each other for years. Kyuhyun grinned, feeling a lot comfortable now more than he had ever been around Sungmin, and the latter looked at ease as well, as they shared another round of laughter as if nothing had happened just earlier.
“So you’ll let me take care of those cuts?”
Kyuhyun nodded “Alright” if it gets him more time to spend with Sungmin, why not take it? He smiled to himself, Zhou Mi had been right, not that he would ever tell him that. And for the first time since he was a child, Cho Kyuhyun was able to say that he didn’t hate trains…well, at least, not the ones with Sungmin in it.

Railroads ( 2/ 2)
“Sungmin hyung?”
“Sungmin hyung! Where are you?”
“What happened?”
“H-He’s gone Mi…He’s gone, and he won’t be coming back…”
