You know those people that are pot heads because it makes everything better? You know the type...that movie was great, i'm going to go see it again stoned because it will be Better..dude... The reality is Nicotine affects the pleasure center of the brain in weird ways to the point where you don't enjoy other things as much without nicotine. The examples I give...gotta smoke when you drink (beer or coffee)...or that after-nookie smoke...it becomes such a engrained thing that for one to enjoy the other activity (eating, drinking, waking up, etc) you have to have nicotine for it to feel "normal". Doesn't help...except to know what is going on in your mind a bit...
Best of luck to you. I quit smoking a few months ago. Wasn't easy, because I really LIKED smoking djarum cloves and cherry dreams. I've bummed a couple since then, but I don't plan to keep doing that because it just pisses my friends off and tempts me to buy a pack. Damn, now I want one... heh. It does get easier with time. If you start again, don't beat yourself up. Keep trying.
I don't know if you've considered this, but I've seen two tricks that work to help get off the cigarettes-- (although right now because I'm trying to get off of quite a few other things, I'm hanging on to cigarettes until I reach a point where I can give quitting smoking all of my attention-- and in a fucked-up way, there's always this thought in the back of my head that makes it ok, that says, "dude, you kicked HEROIN. Cold. After that there's not much that can scare you into backing down." And another voice that says, "yeah, but you can't go down to the gas station or convenience store and buy a little smack, jerkoff". I hear voices anyway, so I just let them chatter... which is a whole story by itself
