One of my favorite quotes of all times is a coach talking to a refs during a game. The coach looks at the ref and says, "This is the NFL, which stands for 'Not For Long' if you keep making calls like that."
Anyway, before the season officially kicks off (and mostly because I have a ton of free time today) I'm going to make my picks for the year:
Let's start with the division that's closest to my heart, the AFC North. I'll pull for the Steelers to go 16-0 and 3-0 in the post season, but that would be in a perfect world. Now that the Ravens actually have a quarterback and Ray Lewis still has a good few years left in him, they could be contenders. The Bengals will find a way to choke, and the Browns, well, they’re the Browns. I’m going with my heart on this one and picking the Steelers to win the division. The Ravens will pull off a wild-card and may make a run at the Superbowl this year.
In the AFC East, the Patriots, barring something horrible happening to Brady (again), will win the division. The Jets, as much as I'd like to see Sanchez win for them, will finish last in the division behind the Pats, Dolphins, and Bills. Everyone will blame T.O. for the Bills epic failure, and they'll be right. 'Cuz, you know, that's his quarterback you’re talking about...
The AFC South also has three strong teams; the Colts, Titans, and Texans. The Jaguars will be a game or two better than they were last year, which would give them 6, maybe 7 wins. I'm going with the Colts to win this division, but Tennessee will pick up the 2nd wild-card in the AFC.
The AFC West is full of turmoil. The Broncos fired their coach, traded their quarterback and have suspended their Pro-Bowl receiver. The Raiders haven’t been good in years, and the Chiefs haven’t been good in decades. All of that being said, I think that the Chargers will find a way to back into the playoffs just like they did last year. They won’t go very far though.
I’ll tackle the NFC in the same way as I did the NFC; my favorite division first. There’s going to be all out war in the NFC North, with Bret being a Viking, Cutler having a chip on his shoulder in Chicago, and the Packers wanting some sort of revenge for being the team that Bret left. As much as I hate to say it, I think that the Vikings will win this division, but the Bears will get a wildcard and cause some chaos in the playoffs. Green Bay is a good team, but they just don’t have the running game that you need to compete in the cold. And if I started to list all of Detroit’s flaws, we’d be here all day. Let’s just hope that Detroit wins “a” game, which would be one more than they won last year.
The NFC East is probably the most talented division in all of football. These guys are going to beat the shit out of themselves, and it’s whoever’s healthiest at the end of the season that’s going to take the crown. I’ll pick the Cowboys, and not just because they cheated and built a stadium that has a 60 yard teleprompter in the middle of the arena that’s going to cause punters a great deal of heart-ache this year. The Giants pick up the 2nd wild-card in the Division though.
The NFC South is supposed to be the Saint’s division to lose this year. Atlanta’s going to be tough too. Tampa’s rebuilding, and the Panther’s can’t seem to put two good seasons together. The Saints will ride Drew Bledsoe’s arm to the playoffs, but they’re a one and done team as far as the playoffs are concerned.
And, that brings us to the NFC West. Remember when the ‘9ers used to be good? And the Rams; they won a Superbowl not too terribly long ago, right? Seattle picked up the running back that the team that lost the Superbowl didn’t want (Edgerrin James), things can’t be too good up there. But, they do have a solid quarterback. Arizona has the curse of the Superbowl losers to overcome, but, looking at the other three teams in their division, they may be the first team in a long while to make it to the playoffs the year after losing the Superbowl. I’m hesitant to pick any team here but, I’ll bet on Kurt Warner and his two receivers, Fitzgerald and Boldin, to win the division.
The Superbowl will be my bruised and battered Steelers against the wily and worn-out arm of Bret Favre. Of course, Ben will lead the Steelers to their 7th Superbowl win.
Peace
