So lately I've been playing more with Photoshop; graphic design's always interested me, and I think it's high time I took it to the next level, since I've been messing around with it for 4-5 years and I've only made a few improvements to my style. So I'm setting myself a challenge: by the end of the year, I'd like to have vastly improved my skills

If you have a look around LJ for icon tutorials, you can find a whole range of techniques for things like selective colour and curves that could also be used for larger graphics. It's impossible for me to recommend any in particular due to the sheer amount out there, but have a look anyway. :)
