Copyright Infringment and Derivative Works

So recently I've been reading Super Junior fanfiction, mostly about Hankyung x Heechul [Hanchul].  There was this one fic that I really liked, which the author claimed to have based on a book.  As I couldn't wait for another update, I went to search for the original book itself because she said she didn't really change much of the plot from the ( Read more... )

one question: are you in the law enforcement team or on the LJ board? Because honestly, even though the author did copy right out of the book, i don't see why a fuss is needed. I really saw the logic in your argument and all, but to me, as long as a there's a disclaimer, then that's fine. She's not making profit(?) from this, so I considered her as sharing the story in a different way.

My original intention was to just notify the author of the possibility of copyright infringement, if someone else who is related to either the Copyright Office or the LJ board was to see it. I, personally, had no intention of telling her to stop writing, or take it down or anything like that (as I mentioned before, I really liked reading the fic as well). It was because my comment had had such a negative effect that it became a big problem and I apologise for that.

In my personal opinion, plagiarism is plagiarism, whether or not you gain anything from it. It's the same as when someone takes the Harry Potter series, and posts it up with name-substitutions. Sure, the author won't have any gain, but neither will it be accepted by the fandom.

I don't think it's so much about right or wrong (although, it can't seriously be seen as 'right' anyway), but more about the respect the author has for a fellow (published) author and the pride effort they put into that piece. What's wrong with sharing the link to the book to your friends and letting them enjoy what you have enjoyed without going to all that trouble of copying it out? Beats me.

Like you said, I'm not so much bothered by what anyone gains from this. I certainly don't have anything to gain from this incident, but I've seen people being drilled and persecuted for less than this and it can really get ugly.

On a different note: I MISS YOU CONNIE! Where have you beeeen?!

Yeah, I've seen people drilled and bashed with far less than this too. It's such a collective thing, fandom ;; But you did a good thing in warning them anyway. Whether they realise it in themselves, is out of your hands.

(I've been around! It's just that without msn, it feels like I'm MIA that's all ;; Last day of uni before sem break for you! :D)
