The water lapped at his feet. It was a cool evening and the sun had just begun to set, casting its crimson rays across the surface of the calm ocean spread out in front of him. Evenings at the beach in Chiba were always pleasantly cool, a welcome contrast to its hot days.

There weren’t many people around at this time of day. Couples out for romantic walks along the beach would not usually got to the rock pool areas anyhow. He sat, perched on the rocks, watching the sun set as he had almost every day since he could remember.

Dear Kojiroh,

It’s been a while since we last saw each other, hasn’t it? How have you been doing? I’ve been fine myself.

The breeze brought with it the familiar ocean spray that dampened his hair and face. He closed his eyes and relished its cool touch, a smile flitting across his lips. The moment seemed suspended in time, the waves rolling gently against the rocks and his feet as he sat.

I guess that, by the time this letter gets to you, it’ll be time to say ‘happy birthday’. I haven’t forgotten you, even after all this time away.

He drew a knee up to his chest and rested his chin on top of it.

Speaking of birthdays, Keigo and Kunimitsu’s birthdays are coming up too. You’re older than both of them, surprisingly enough, even if it is by only a few days. We’re planning a surprise for them. It’s a shame we can’t spend your birthday together, like we used to. I really miss holding surprise parties for you when you aren’t expecting it.

“Sae-san!”

The voice of his freshman captain destroyed the tranquillity of the moment, along with the silence of his thoughts. He unconsciously let go of the letter he had been holding in his hand all this time. It fell into the water and was immediately swallowed up by the waves, disappearing for a moment, before surfacing again in shreds. He watched the pieces float away silently.

“Ah, sorry, Sae-san! You dropped your letter into the water!”

Birthdays are a blessing, Kojiroh. Mine was. May yours be as well.

Happy Birthday, Kojiroh.

Love always,

Syusuke.

“It’s all right, Kentarou.”

He slid off the rocks to join his captain.

Birthdays are a blessing . . . may yours be as well. Happy birthday.
