They're still in fairly open country, at least compared to the dense forests they'd been traveling through before emerging into the weird three-legged thing's range. This must've been farmland once. The trees're too young and the soil too good (Adrian dug up a sample to have a look) for their sparseness to indicate a disaster; they're just new. ( Read more... )

Chell's never really seen something outside of industrialized areas, so all the little clues that Adrian notices are lost on her. The pain in her leg is entirely gone by now, but she's caring the Desert Eagle anyway, watching for any sign of movement. She's not going down again.

Shephard nods once, and continues moving. Eventually he stops, peering ahead. "Wall," he says. "Up ahead, in the trees. Used to be a wall here- this was human territory."

The wall in question is about waist height, of old grey stone, topped with cracking, broken slate. It's shattered in places, but it's still recognizable as the work of human hands.
