Shephard ducked out of the base this morning to make a fast run to Milliways. No offense to Freeman or the people who make decisions around here, but he's not about to leave base defense in the hands of one civilian, no matter what civilian it is. "What I need is for the last fuckin' survivor of the fuckin' Air Force Academy to show up on the steps right 'bout now 'n take the helm of that fuckin' whirlybird for me," says Shephard. "But I'll settle for a gunner. We got us an incoming Strider force 'n I can't imagine they ain't gonna send air support along if they know what they're doin'."

He hadn't quite meant it that way- it was more his way of blowing off nervous steam before the storm- but he's too on edge to realize or make the correction. Instead he just nods. "Thanks," he says. "I tell you what, we get out of this thing alive, next time we hit Milliways I'm gonna buy me as much beer 'n you as much cake as our goddamn stomachs can handle..."
