i would say in like maybe 95% (98?) of other countries in the world old people don't have as good a life as in SIngapore.

Mainly because
(a) they don't get to live that long.
(b) they aren't healthy or mobile or strong enough to work.
(c) even if they need and would like to clear tables for a living no one will pay them to do it.

tell you friend to wake up and smell the coffee. retiring "young" on a state paid pension has bankrupted countries and stolen the future of their youth. would he like that system instead?

by definition only a vanishingly small percentage of the human race can lead a luxurious life. for everyone else good enough has to be good enough. if every one won the 1st prize in 4D it wouldn't be a first prize.

be thankful for small mercies. clean drinking water from a tap. a permanent shelter. not going to bed hungry. a toilet that flushes. a job. why doesn't he ask how many countries in the world are there where those are luxuries?

he really needs to get out (of singapore) more.
(and perhaps stop living in ad-

Thanks for the input. I appreciate that, especially coming from someone who'd travel/stayed overseas a fair bit like you. =)

Perhaps I misrepresented my friend a bit. Frankly no one loves the idea of working till you die. Its more of planning our lives rather than "running away" which I do not believe in as well.

I can't deny that there is a fair population of us living overseas and fitting in comfortably. At the end of the day, it is a choice thing? I agree, we need to get out more. And yes, clean water, being able to roam the streets at night without fear of being mugged. All these are hard to come by but it shouldn't stop us from chasing what we want and our ideal retirement.

Everybody wants to get on top (at some levels or another), the main thing is to stay grounded that's difficult.
