Remix/Redux V: Changes and new rules and tentative timeline

There are going to be some changes this year, which will hopefully make things easier on me, which makes it more fun for everyone! Or something.

Anyway, change number one is that there will be an increase in the number of stories per fandom one needs to participate - as of this year, to participate, one will need five (5) stories of at least 500

This is simultaneously thrilling (yay, Remix!) and scary -- I only have one non-RPF fandom that qualifies (HP) and am really not all that thrilled about remixing more HP fic. :-|

I will have to consider this strongly when deciding whether or not to sign up this year.

Well, if there are other FPF fandoms you are willing to write in, there's always the pinch hitting option. You can be a pinch hitter without signing up for the challenge proper.

Oh, true. Hmm. But I do like being assigned someone in advance, and having that stretch of time to peruse stories and choose. Still, I will keep pinch hitting in mind!

And you can always choose two other FPF fandoms to write in, in addition to HP, and you might get matched like that. But i can't guarantee anything.

The one logistical problem I see is that you can only have 50 posts in the moderation queue for a community at one time; after that, it'll start throwing an error message whenever anyone tries to make a new post. Since Remix has historically been a lot bigger than that, that may be a problem.

I will have to think about staggering the opening of the archive then.

I only know this because I used to be an LJ support volunteer, and one of the common communities questions we got was "Bzuh? It says 'Moderation queue full'" (to which the answer was "Go ask the mods to clean out the ginormous backlog of posts they haven't either approved or rejected, and then you'll be able to post.")

Staggering the opening could work. I totally understand not wanting to deal with coding and uploading that many stories yourself. Fandom ought not make your head explode.

If I knew how to install efiction, I might consider that, but I don't, and while this is less searchable - though I can set up tags and such for people to use - than the current database, it addresses the feedback issues, which I think are more important to the participants.

But yes, I am trying to keep head esplodey to a minimum this year.

I'm a little disconcerted by the variance in number of words for the original and the remix. Would you consider allowing stories of 500-1000 words as remixes of originals 500-1000 words?

You don't have to choose a 500 word story to remix, and sometimes even a drabble can be expanded into a thousand word story. I can't keep track of how long each original story is in order to determine if the length of the remix is appropriate. I honestly don't see 1000 words as a difficulty, considering it is a cross-fandom norm for ficathon stories.
