My two cents...astrogirl2October 29 2009, 02:27:10 UTC
First of all, I definitely enjoyed this, so many, many thanks to you guys for making it work!
To answer some of the questions... I really liked having the opportunity to write multiple remixes. It was fun, and knowing that I only had to write one of them made it pleasantly low-pressure. And I think the story reveal posts worked very well. The timing between posts and the length of each post seemed just about perfect, and having things organized by category and fandom like that made it very easy to find the stuff I wanted to read

That was something I debated with intra-franchise crossovers, but ultimately, yeah, it was just a lot easier to bundle everything labelled as a crossover into the same post (and it's hard to know which of those fics are really crossovery and which aren't, without reading every fic and being intimately familiar with the canon, which we can't always do).
I'm glad you enjoyed the round, and that the way things were organised otherwise worked for you :)
To start, this was my first round, so I don't really have a basis for comparison. I really enjoyed myself, though. I'll definitely be back. I did feel the round was a bit on the long side -- I wrote mine in the last week, I confess, but the whole process didn't take too long, and I wrote three. (I really loved filling multiple requests. Especially because they were drabbles, and therefore short.) I think the requirements were fine, perfectly reasonable but not too strict. Having the remixes go public in staggered batches meant that I ended up reading more of them than I otherwise would have, so I liked that. And anonymity is fun. I read fic as it came out, and then by using tags

As a former mod, I just wanted to chime in a bit about the writing more than receiving -- for all the rounds I ran, I personally could only guarantee that a person would receive one remix regardless of whether they wrote one or five, which is rather unfortunate but I just found that the spreadsheeting would have driven me insane if I tried to up that. Even in the one lightning round we had with only 5 people (both writing & receiving, so it was a reciprocal round), the distribution still wasn't 100% equal due to the fact that not all participants share fandoms, and the fandoms people sign up to write don't always match with the what people can offer for remixing

I'm glad to hear that the posting schedule allowed you to read more fics - that was the aim, so yay :)
Like trascendenza said, it's nearly impossible to make sure that everybody receives as many crossovers as they write, especially since people were only obligated to write their primary remix, and there's no real way of knowing in advance whether they'll complete their optional assignments. I did aim for some sort of parity when doing match ups, and we sent out extra pinch hits for people who wrote multiple remixes but only got one in return, but in the end, all we can really do is try, and hope people aren't too disappointed if it doesn't work out.
This round was actually a little shorter than previous rounds (three weeks instead of four); I suspect that a lot of participants probably do write their remixes in a fairly short period of time, but we also had people asking for extensions. But thank you for your perspective, and for your feedback, definitely!
One thing that was sort of disappointing was going into this writing for three people and only getting one story remixed, but I understand that with non-reciprocal rounds there are more remixees than remixers, so it makes sense and I'm fine with it.
This is why I usually signup for both, but only write one remix myself. This round, however, I was shocked to receive 4 remixes, though I still only wrote one!
I liked the batches, and was surprised to see two remixes of my stories! The one thing is that I interpreted 'we're not going to go too nuts making sure people stick to 100 words' as 'most fic will be around 100 words,' and instead there were some longish fics out there, so I ended up feeling like a bit of a slacker.
Don't feel like a slacker! We encourage remixes that are close to 100 words, but anything less than 1000 words is allowed, so it's really just a personal preference :)
Yeah, if it offers any perspective, I actually felt like a bit of a slacker for not managing to edit down more of my remixes closer to 100 words, so! Then again, I did like having the flexibility of not having to stick to that with every remix. But my point was that in a community with the word "drabble" in its name, I suspect 100-word-exact fics will always be appreciated. :)
Yeah, I had one that came out to 495 words, and the comment I made when I reposted it on my LJ was, well, it was a pinch-hit, so I didn't have time to make it shorter. :)
As always, I had a great time. I was mostly only mad at myself, because I signed up to write five remixes and was only able to do two - and because it only occurred to me after the deadline that I should probably have let the mods know that I wouldn't be writing those other three. /o\
That's okay - as long as you complete your primary remix, it's all good :) And it's okay if you didn't let us know in advance that you wouldn't be completing the others; it makes things a little easier, but not so much that it makes a huge difference.
I really enjoyed it! I will definitely be participating again, thank you.
I particularly liked being able to write (and receive) more than one story. Since we are writing such short things, that made it feel like more. I found the time-frame quite convenient. I also found the requirements to be reasonable. I like anonymous posting, but I understand that it must be more work for the mods, so if you wanted to get rid of it, I wouldn't mind too much.
I prefer 100-word-exactly drabbles, so I'd like a round limited to those. I also think a remixes-of-remixes would be awesome, but it might be difficult to do (would you need permission of the original authors? Also, most people have probably not written that many remixes, so you wouldn't have as many stories to choose between).
Overall, I had a wonderful time! Thank you again, mods.
Our last round was a drabble purist round, so it's probably something we'll be doing again in the future - good to know you'd be interested in it. And I'd love to run a remixtheremix round, but thinking about the logistics gives me a slight headache, so I guess we'll see :)
