Shameful music confessional: A country music apologia

Jan 09, 2006 21:10

I admit it: I enjoy country music.  I say this having done much soul-searching, deep consideration, and other such nonsense.  Jamie converted me.

However, previously having been adamantly opposed to the lot, I feel it necesary to defend my position.  So here you have it, folks: reasons why country music is great.

1: Country music can lampoon itself. )

Allison Krauss simply has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. But is "Margaritaville" really considered "country?" I know Jimmy Buffett had his "before the beach" days, but I dunno; I always thought that "Margaritaville" was more into his "island" music than his "country"-type stuff.

I grew up listening to country/bluegrass/folk music, as it's my dad's kind of music (plus he plays banjo, and my mom used to play the guitar and some banjo herself a little bit as well). As such I have an appreciation for country (primarily anything pre-90's when it became majorly pop-ified) and bluegrass. It also of course always reminds me of my dad. I won't go as far as to say I'm a fan myself however, for various reasons, though I'll definitely say I like a song if I like it, regardless of it's genre. (And for the record, Allison Krauss is more "bluegrass" than "country," though I suppose "bluegrass" would be considered a subset.)

Alison Krauss's voice is beautiful, and she sings some fabulous songs with it, too. I tend to enjoy the "bluegrass" subset: Rhonda Vincent, Alison Krauss, Del McCoury, people l;ike that.

I know it seems kind of strange, but "parrothead" music like Jimmy Buffett is actually considered a subset of country. Some of Buffett's major successors are pretty strongly country, including Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, and Kenny Chesney.

I agree with you, though; I'm not particularly limited by genre, as indicated by my Winamp media library. But I nonetheless felt the need to defend my newfound country tendencies considering my previous vehement opposition (the "cool" kids listened to country at my high school, so I tried to be contrary).

That works. I'm still all about the Drunk Russian remixes though. ;) Here's a fun thought: country Drunk Russian remixes. I can just hear 'em belt out "I've got friends in low places..." now. Heh heh.

Now that would definitely add a note of authenticity to the song! I'm telling you, we need to come up with a whole series of drunk russian remixes. Just head over to Russia and ask them to sing popular U.S. pop songs while drunk. We'd make millions!
