Gauging interest...

I mentioned somewhere back in the comments of another post that I have an extensive body of original fic. I've always been hesitant to dip too far into JK's world, because it's all relatively tightly interrelated, plot wise, and it was hard to write a story with substantial original plot and at least attempt not to step on canon when I didn't know ( Read more... )

OCs don't bother me really as long as they're not Mary Sue's. In fact, OCs are quite useful for moving the story on and developing characters if it's clear that the others (Harry, Dumbledore etc) in the story can't be there due to what is said in the books.

So, in short, yes I'd love to read it. The story sounds interesting. :)

I think that's largely what drove me to play with the idea in the first place - the ability to dig into an area where the reader will know/learn things that Harry doesn't necessarily know (or doesn't understand the ramifications of). First chapter is up... locked, because I don't post anything involving my characters to LJ in an unlocked form. I'm still playing with potentially publishing a novel I've written featuring them as central characters, so I don't want even the fun stuff like this to potentially get me into intellectual property and copyright issues down the road.

I will never understand what people have against OCs. You NEED OCs - surely not every character has their entire family murdered/dead like Harry has?

Mary Sues are of course terrible and need to be shot.

But what I actually wanted to say... post it. :D Yay more Remus!

I think with HP in particular, it's very easy to stray into Mary Sue territory (and there's a lot more of it, since there are a lot more younger kids writing HP fic as opposed to kids writing, say, Star Trek fic or something)... the temptation exists to create a character who can do wandless magic, is an Animagus, can beat Dumbledore in a battle, etc... and the less experienced the writer, the greater the temptation, lol.

Unfortunately it's led to a backlash wherein people seem to think all OCs are automatically Mary Sues, which is a real shame.

Anyway, the first chapter is up... locked, because I don't post anything involving my characters to LJ in an unlocked form. I'm still playing with potentially publishing a novel I've written featuring them as central characters, so I don't want even the fun stuff like this to potentially get me into intellectual property and copyright issues down the road.
