Chapter One: Life In My Closet

- Late June, summer before 6th Year-

“Mum! We’re back!” James Potter announced, kicking open his front door. His body immediately followed, lugging several bags behind him. Two boys came in next, trying to get through the door at the same time, both failing.

“I didn’t realize you needed to be up James’s arse your entire life, Wormtail,” the boy on the right, Sirius Black quipped.

“Yes, well, I’d forgotten that your abnormally large head takes up nearly an entire doorway on its own,” Peter Pettigrew retorted.

“James?” Mrs. Potter exited her kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron. “Boys!” Her eyes widened at the entering teenagers, Remus Lupin coming in last, walking at a slow, calm pace. “I thought you weren’t going to be getting back for another couple of hours. Food’s not ready yet---” She motioned back to the kitchen, but Sirius pushed his way to the front of the group, wrapping his arms around James’s disheveled looking mother, interrupting her.

“I missed you Tethys, you know that?”

She smiled, raising her arms in reciprocation of Sirius’s embrace.

“I missed you, too. I hope you and James haven’t gotten into trouble, in, oh, I dunno,” she glanced at her watch comically, “the hour or so since you’d gotten on the train?”

“Nah.” James took a seat on his sitting room’s couch. “Remus did an exceptional job keeping us in line.” The boys had ritually taken a Muggle train to James’s ever since that was the way Remus’s mother had wanted it back in the summer after second year.

“Oh, did he?” She raised her eyebrows in Remus’s direction. “You doing all right, sweet?”

“Yes, Mrs. Potter. I’m doing great. Thank you for having me over.”

“Well, what kind of mother would I be to break tradition?” She smirked, referencing how the boys always spent the third week of holidays at James’s house, but was staring at Sirius, still clinging to her.

“I think you’ve a Sirius attached, Mrs. Potter,” Peter pointed out, taking a seat next to James.

“Hmmm…I suppose I do. I’m rubbish at separating spells, I’m afraid, so Sirius must remain attached until Atticus gets home.”

“Where is Dad? We really that early?” James asked, and his mother nodded.

“Quite early. Why don’t you boys go upstairs and get settled in, then maybe dinner will be ready?” she suggested and the boys silently agreed, all picking up their things (James was tending to Peter’s larger bags) and taking their respective seats on the floor of James’s room upstairs.

“I guess it won’t kill us to start the meeting early this year. Remus, any notes from the last?”

“Not really. We’d decided that Sirius shouldn’t have to go home over the summer and that we’d do everything in our power to make sure that he didn’t. He spent most of it at your place, yes?”

“Yes.” James sent a sideways glance at Sirius, who’d told him a very big secret involving a very big crush on Remus during one of his moodier phases over the summer.

“May I make a motion?” Peter raised his hand.

“Proceed,” James instructed after catching nods of approval from Remus and Sirius.

“I move that we name last summer the Summer of Sirius’s Poofness, just for recording purposes of course,” Peter said solemnly, and James and Remus broke out into laughter, while Sirius mock-attacked Peter.

“Your blood will be on my hands someday, Wormtail, and I will love it,” Sirius threatened after James restrained him, though all true viciousness was lost due to Sirius’s partial smile. He caught Remus’s eye and winked, causing Remus to flush in what he hoped was a non-obvious way.

James and Peter could handle Sirius being that way. He was out there, anyway, and prone to letting any sort of teasing roll right off his back. If they found out that Remus returned Sirius’s feelings, and that both boys…Well, it was best not to dwell on it, Remus decided. He’d have to deal with telling Peter and James sooner or later (preferably later), but for now he just didn’t need to think about that.

“I must admit that Peter’s title has a certain ring to it,” James said. “Agree, Moony?”

“Quite. I second Peter’s motion.”

“I third it.” James nodded.

“I fourth it!” Sirius added and all boys broke out into giggles.

"All right," James composed himself. "What she would we cover this year?"

"How about what wonderful tricks you could use to sway Evans?" Sirius suggested James's way and was met with a shrug.

"I've decided to give up on that childish pursuit."

"You're giving up on chasing Lily?" Remus asked in disbelief.

"No more Evans chasing! I think I'm having a heart attack!" Peter clutched his chest melodramatically.

"I've hardly said that I'm not going to want her, but yes, the chasing bit is getting old. I think I'll just wait for her to come to me."

"What?" Peter asked.

"I have a better suggestion," Sirius said. "You could grow wings!"

"Are you implying that you don't believe that I've given up on Lily?"

"I'm not implying it, Jimbo, I'm downright saying it."

"That hurts, Padfoot."

"Grow thicker skin, Horn Boy."

Remus put his hand between Sirius and James. “I, Remus, the mediator, will choose this opportunity to intervene because Mr. Potter will be home soon, and then we'll have supper, and I will not want to discuss these trivial little boy things with you after this."

"Maybe you could practice hitting on Lily through Remus, James, he sounds like her," Peter said, and Remus sent him a frown.

"You do sound like Lily, Moony." Sirius pushed Remus's hand back (while Remus ignored his stomach’s flip at the contact) and smiled at him. "You wound up about something?"

"There are worse things than sounding like Lily," was all Remus said before restarting the meeting. The boys talked about nothing of any importance for about another hour before James's father arrived home from the Ministry and they ate dinner.

Afterwards, the boys went back to James's room and threw around various discussion topics.

"More pranks?" Peter said.

"Nah," James waved him off. "Good pranks work better when you think them up when they come to you."

"That's right, Wormy, you must be at one with your inner prankster, and he at one with you," Sirius agreed.

"Let's talk about girls!" Peter smiled. "Maybe you could date one of the other girls to make Lily jealous, Prongs," Peter suggested and Remus about condemned the thought when he noticed the interested look on James's face.

"You're contemplating this," he accused him.

"I do like it, the prospect. Making Evans lust for me after seeing me enthralled with another. Poetic. Points to Wormtail!" James nodded and Peter beamed.

"She's hardly going to lust you if she's not even remotely interested," Remus said in a detached voice.

"I think I need to talk to Remus alone," Sirius said. James frowned.

"Just don't seduce him."

"I won't seduce him." Sirius sighed. He grabbed Remus's arm and tugged him into the hall outside James's room, shutting the door behind them.

"Should we eavesdrop?" Peter asked, and James made a disgusted face.

"All Padfoot does is drool over Remus. It's weird, and I'd prefer not to hear him drool over him in person."

Outside the door, Sirius frowned.

"So Lily fancies you, then?" Sirius asked.

"What makes you say that!" Remus objected.

"Not that I blame her. You being as magnetically attractive and all." Sirius rubbed Remus's arms and put his face very close to the other boy’s. Remus turned bright red and flinched back. Sirius pulled off, frowning. "God! Can I not even touch you?"

"No, no. You can---I, I guess." Remus removed himself from Sirius's grip in contrast to his words. "I'm going to go back into James's room."

"Do you like me, Remus?" Sirius asked.

"What?"

"Well, I know you said you did, and I know you don't lie. But I also know that you can't possibly live with yourself when it comes to making others unhappy. You kissed me, too, you know."

"I know." Remus blushed. "But I'd just prefer it if we didn't talk about this in the hallway."

"Well, fine. Can I come to your guest room tonight?"

"Wha--You're sleeping in James's room!?!"

"Just to talk to you, not to do anything that would cause your voice to raise three octaves as it just did. An impressive feat, considering the fact that we are whispering."

"Sirius don't make me feel all guilty for being-confused-- by this. Let me come to terms to this at my pace, not yours, all right?" Remus snapped.

"All right." Sirius smiled. "So Lily likes you?"

"She sent me a billion owls over the summer," Remus admitted. "But all I did was try to tell her how wonderful James was and all she did was talk about me."

"That tart! After showing absolutely no interest in James and then hitting on you? The, the trollop."

"Don't make light of this."

"It's very hard not to. James loves her. She hates James. She likes you. You're into me. She hates me. It's utterly Shakespeare."

"What play have you read?" Remus asked and Sirius chuckled. Remus continued, "Anyway, it is ironic. And please don't come to my room tonight. Peter probably wouldn't wake up, but James would, and he will notice you're gone and would come to the conclusion that you're psychotic and obsessive and now watching me sleep."

"Your nostrils flair up, it's quite cute."

"Anyway, just don't. I don't want to tell them yet."

"Tell them what? We've kissed three times? Woo! We'd be nominated for Hogwarts’s Most Boring Sex Life Award."

The word 'sex' caused Remus to start breathing in an erratic manner, and his hand instantly went to his heart. Closing his eyes, he leaned against James’s doorframe and grimaced.

"Are you sure you're okay, Moony?"

"I--just-- I hate myself, Padfoot."

"Because you fancy me?"

Remus opened one eye. "Yes, but it's not you."

"Kind of not convincing."

"I hate myself, I love who you are. There's a difference." Remus steadied himself and with one final breath, he opened James's door. "I love who you are," he added for emphasis.

Despite still feeling vaguely offended, Sirius couldn't contain the smile on his face.

---

When Remus awoke in the middle of the night, Peter was snoring loudly on the bed next to him, and his bladder was threatening to explode, most likely due to the two butterbeers chugged immediately before dozing off.

He snuck quietly to the bathroom down the hall and was surprised when he emerged and found Sirius standing in the hall, looking ominous.

"Sirius!" he sputtered, jumping back. "Don't do that, you look like a ghost."

"The Potters got rid of their ghoul two years ago," Sirius dismissed him, smiling. "So nothing haunt-like will meet you here in these halls."

"That's what they always say before a manic spirit attacks."

"I know; I almost said that hoping a ghost would appear."

"I feel stupid whispering in the hall, Sirius, let's go in to the bathroom. It's soundproof."

"Action?" Sirius asked eagerly, waggling his eyebrows comically as Remus ushered him inside.

"Conversation," Remus chuckled.

After they shut the door, Remus sat on the edge of the tub.

"I haven't got to talk to you at all since term ended, Sirius." Remus patted the spot next to him. Sirius frowned.

"You just said you didn't want me sneaking into your room."

"That would be suspicious. And there was the chance of-well, of something happening. This I can dismiss as just talking because nothing romantic is going to happen in a bathroom, with its environment."

"You've obviously never seen a bathroom with Sirius in it." He began to jig. "I can make it quite sexy." He made what he apparently thought an attractive face.

Remus laughed. "Sit down."

"Just one kiss." Sirius took his seat. "Please."

Remus looked nervous.

"Look," Sirius went on. "We're never gonna get a chance to be alone. If you're gonna like me and be a boy like that, then we're going to have to resolve to kissing whenever we can."

"All right." Remus finally nodded, leaning over and pecking Sirius quickly.

"Three whole weeks since we've kissed and you're giving me that?"

"Fine!"

Remus kissed Sirius again, intensifying this one.

When they finished, Sirius smiled and grabbed Remus's hand.

"How're you?" he whispered.

Remus leaned his forehead against Sirius's.

"I'm all right."

"That's good?"

"It is. I, um, like this." Remus rubbed Sirius's hand.

"Me too."

Sirius kissed Remus again, pushing with so much force that Remus's jaw popped temporarily out of place. But that stopped neither of the boys, and they continued kissing, gaining momentum.

"You’re---So----So-Amazing, ----Remus," Sirius said between breaths, and Remus felt his chest tighten, but ignored the statement for the moment, content to just be kissing Sirius.

If Sirius expected a response of some sort from Remus, he didn't wait, and moved on to kissing Remus's neck. Remus closed his eyes in satisfaction and smiled.

Sirius wanted him. Despite knowing that he was a werewolf. Despite knowing that he tripped over his own feet every other two meters. Despite knowing that he was ridiculously insecure, or that he could never gain weight no matter how hard he tried. Despite knowing that he'd had a bad habit of shoplifting when he'd been in second year. Sirius knew every deep dark secret Remus had, and he still wanted him.

It was a good feeling. It was...

"Oh! I, erm! Excuse me, I guess! I---Wow!"

The door was immediately slammed shut.

Sirius stopped kissing Remus and moved so that he was holding the left side of his face to the right of Remus's. Remus didn't open his eyes.

"Wormtail just walked in on us, didn't he?"

"If he didn't, he's quite the talent for throwing his voice."

July is next.

I'd also like to shamelessly plug my one shot 'Thirty' because I'm just so proud of it.
