a/n: i suck/have no idea how to drive so please do not take my driving jargon seriously.
Youngjae’s eyes glanced over the apartment ads in the newspaper once more. It was barely eight in the morning but his mind was already swimming with a million different ‘what ifs’ and scenarios as he finished up his first cup of coffee. Why did he keep doing this? Why did he find himself taking a second look at this page every morning? Youngjae had an apartment, and a nice one at that, that he had been sharing with his boyfriend for the last couple of years. But then why did it feel so empty? Why did Youngjae feel like it would be better if him and Daehyun were no longer together?
Stressed and out of his mind, Youngjae threw the nearly empty coffee cup into the sink and hurried to his shared bedroom with Daehyun to get ready. He was thankful the other had work most of the day so he wouldn’t have to face him with all the feelings overwhelming his body. With a toothbrush dangling out of his mouth Youngjae dialed the only person he knew could help him sort out his feelings.
“Hm, Himchan? Yeah it’s me. Meet me at the coffee shop in fifteen minutes, okay? No, I don’t care if you’re in the middle of making coffee since you’d drink another cup immediately after that. Listen I- Okay, okay. No but- Listen, just meet me okay? It’s urgent.”
Grabbing his things and stuffing them into his pocket, Youngjae slipped on the closest pair of shoes (which he double checked to make sure were his since he had wanted to stop wearing Daehyun’s things) and hurried out the door.
“You think what?” Himchan asked, slamming his coffee down on the table.
“I think Daehyun doesn’t love me anymore.” Youngjae mumbled a little louder, already embarrassed he had to talk about relationship problems with the elder.
“And why do you think that? To me it seems like you’re the one who’s pulling away from him.”
“Well because...” Youngjae twiddled with his fingers again, trying to think of where to start his list of problems. “It started a couple months ago. Daehyun...he kept coming home late from work. At first I understood perfectly fine. He was tired from working so hard and therefore was grouchy when he got home. But...it never went away. There were moments that I doubted any bad thoughts I thought about him but those were only moments. Most of the time now he barely even acknowledges I’m here. He leaves the house early and comes home late; we rarely even eat dinner together anymore.”
“Looks like you guys need to finally see if this relationship can last or not.”
“What do you mean?” Youngjae replied, he was honestly at that point where he would try anything to stop the pain in his heart.
“Doesn’t Daehyun still not know how to drive?”
“What?”
“Daehyun. He’s never learned how to drive, right?” Himchan replied again.
“Well, yeah...but what has that got to do with anything?”
“Then help him, teach him. Dude needs to know how to drive so he can stop taking the bus to work everyday.” He leaned back in his chair, putting his hands behind his head.
Youngjae raised an eyebrow in annoyance, “And how the hell is teaching him how to drive going to strengthen our relationship?”
Himchan laughed as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, making the younger scowl, “Trust me, if Daehyun can last one driving lesson with you and keep his cool, then he loves you a whole lot.”
So that’s how Youngjae found himself shaking in his seat at the dining table as he watched the clock tick by with his car keys furiously shaking in his hands. Daehyun promised to be home at 9pm sharp. It was 8:58 pm.
Two minutes earlier than expected, Daehyun came stumbling in through the front door, looking tired as ever and Youngjae wondered if he should postpone the driving lesson until tomorrow.
No Youngjae...get a grip. It’s now or never!
“W-Welcome home, Daehyun. How was your day?”
Daehyun let out a groan as he tossed off his shoes and trudged to their bedroom, flopping himself onto it with his jacket barely even off. “Rough day?” Youngjae asked again, in his calmest voice, his keys still jingling in his hands.
“Yeah. Something like that. Are you going somewhere?” Daehyun replied, not even raising his head from the bed to look at Youngjae.
“Umm...well I was just thinking that tonight we could spend some time together.”
“Not tonight, Jae. Really bad night...” He was already curling up in bed still clad in his suit, “Maybe next weekend...” His voice was already drifting off.
Youngjae was about to slink back to the kitchen in defeat when he remembered how many times this scene has been played and how many ‘next weekend’ promises Daehyun had already broken. He put his hands on his hips and took a deep breath, “No, Daehyun. We are spending time together tonight because I’m gonna give you a driving lesson.”
Daehyun groggily raised himself from the bed, “A driving lesson? Youngjae, are you crazy?”
“No, I’m not. You need to learn how to drive so you can actually use that car your dad got for you for your birthday and not have it take up so much room in the garage.”
“Can’t we do it some other time? Like next weekend?”
“No!” Youngjae yelled, “Since it’s nighttime most of the local parking lots are empty so I can take you there to practice.”
Daehyun sighed and rolled off the bed in defeat, “Fine...Fine.”
Youngjae had actually felt some excitement bubbling up in the pit of his stomach as he pulled into the brightly lit empty parking lot. He hadn’t spent any time with Daehyun in months and even being stuck in a car with a drowsy Daehyun was better than nothing. He was just glad Daehyun even agreed to coming.
“Okay, let’s switch seats and I’ll walk you through the basics.”
“Alright.” Daehyun yawned, stretching before escaping from the warmth of the car and into the cold night air.
Youngjae felt a little more reassured when he noticed Daehyun seemed a lot more alert and awake upon the switch, as he was suddenly second guessing the idea of being in a vehicle with a sleepy man who didn’t know how to drive.
“First start the car.”
Daehyun turned the key in the ignition and started the car flawlessly.
“Okay good, now put the car in drive.”
“Umm which one was that again?”
Youngjae sighed, “It’s the d on the stick, Daehyun.”
Daehyun snickered and repeated Youngjae’s words, “D on the stick...”
“Oh my god, Daehyun shut up.” Youngjae rolled his eyes and leaned back in his chair, wondering if this relationship was worth saving at all.
“You weren’t saying that on your birthday when I was ramming into-”
“JUNG DAEHYUN YOU BE QUIET RIGHT NOW.”
“Fine, fine.” Daehyun threw his hands up in defeat before putting the car in drive, “What do I do next?”
“Hmm...Take a wild guess.”
“I put my foot on the gas pedal?” He asked, following through with the action.
“Mmmhhm and?”
“I floor it?”
“Mmmhhm...and then....WAIT NO!”
It was too late and Youngjae was greeted by a huge jerk and his forehead being dangerously close to the dashboard when Daehyun finally found the brake after having his other foot bounce around on the ground.
“No, Daehyun, you don’t push it down all the way!”
“I don’t?”
“No, of course not!”
After explaining to Daehyun how brakes and gas pedals and turn signals work, Youngjae decided it was time for Daehyun to actually try to drive the car.
“Okay, okay you’re doing good so far, good.” Youngjae said as he watched his boyfriend start the car and put it into drive without any problems. He braced himself as Daehyun put his foot on the gas pedal but began to resume breathing again when Daehyun slowly started the car forward.
“I’m doing it! Hey, Jae I’m doing it!” Daehyun cheered excitedly, increasing the speed of the car a little more.
“Yeah, good job!” Youngjae exclaimed, “Now try using your turn signal and turn right.”
“Umm my turn signal was where was it...” Daehyun was fumbling around, trying to remember where the turn signal was in the car. His foot was still on the gas.
“Daehyun it’s-”
“No I can figure this out myself!” Daehyun yelled back like an annoyed child.
“Daehyun please it’s right-” Youngjae reached over trying to help the other.
“Nooooo!” Daehyun whined, slapping Youngjae’s arm away as he continued to attempt to drive the car.
“Daehyun stop! You’re gonna crash into the building!”
Youngjae was surprised when Daehyun gave him a bouquet of roses upon returning home from work a month after the night that both of them decided Youngjae shouldn’t help Daehyun learn to drive; and he shocked him once again when Daehyun whipped out his freshly printed license.
“You passed!” Youngjae squealed before quickly embracing his boyfriend and kissing him on the cheek.
Daehyun had surprised Youngjae once more when he came home from the grocery store a week later and was surprised to see Daehyun home at noon and packing up a suitcase.
“Dae...what are you doing?” Youngjae feared for the worst.
“JaeJae! There you are! C’mon and pack! I’m taking you for a road trip!”
Youngjae’s heart rose, “A road trip? Are you crazy?”
“No! You didn’t think I was just gonna let my license burn a hole in my pocket, did you? Now hurry and get your suitcase!”
Daehyun had told Youngjae that this road trip was an apology for ignoring Youngjae for so many months and would be a way from them to rekindle what they had lost. Daehyun kept explaining he was sorry that he had made no effort in trying to talk to Youngjae during that time, and wanted to make it up to him as best as he could.
As they were getting into the car Daehyun promised that this would be nothing like their previous road trip, where he nagged driver Youngjae every 5 minutes that he was hungry or needed to pee. Youngjae doubted that.
“We’re pulling up to a rest stop.” Youngjae said, looking at his map on his phone, “Do you need to go?”
“Nah.”
“Are you you sure? Cause the next rest stop is an hour away.”
“I’m fine.”
But twenty minutes later Youngjae heard the last thing in the world he wanted to hear slip through Daehyun’s mouth.
“I’m turning back. I have to pee so freaking badly.”
