aff link II III Kris wrote his first love poem on a Thursday.
It was a sunny day, nice weather for spending with a lover. His college was alive and buzzing with seniors (including himself) excited about graduation which lay just a day away. Kris sighed and stared at the blank sheet of college ruled lined paper. The image of his boyfriend, Tao immediately popped into his head and the words exploded onto the paper, almost too fast for his hand to handle.
So far away are you, yet so close I long for you to be.
But what stands between us? Not the earth, nor the trees.
Not even the sky could measure the distance between my heart and yours.
Kris held the paper up to the light. It was cheesy, that was for sure. But it was his first love poem, nobody should blame him. He neatly folded the letter and slipped it into the envelope. He licked it sealed, believing that his spit would bring him closer to Tao. It was his own personal touch. He scribbled down the address, his own address, and put a stamp in the top right hand corner. On his way back to his dorm room he put it in the mailbox and hoped for a reply.
The graduation ceremony was exciting and festive as expected. All the graduating students were surrounded by family and friends, everyone except Kris. His parents couldn't make it to the ceremony, due to the cost of the expensive airfare, and Tao had never replied to Kris's email, and thus didn't show up to the ceremony either. Kris didn't mind though. He knew Tao had a good reason not to.
That night, as he was packing the last of his belongings from his dorm room, he sat cross legged on the ground and used a cardboard box filled with clothes as a desk.
Another day passes without the sight of your face.
I pray each day that you may win your race.
For our eternal love is not something that can be broken so easily,
and I count the days until I may kiss you once more.
As he did the day before, Kris neatly folded the letter into an envelope, licked it sealed and delivered the letter as he was shoving the last of his belongings into a taxi set for the airport. He was finally going home.
As much as he wanted to visit Tao the moment he stepped off the plane, he knew there was still much to do. His parents were excited about him graduating top of his class and as a result had rented an apartment for him. After a short and joyful conversation with his parents, Kris was already moving into his new apartment, which happened to be the building next to Tao's.
Being a man just out of college and living alone, the blonde haired boy didn't have many belongings. He managed to unpack quickly and was eager to run just across the street to Tao's building. However as he was about to step out, he glanced at his watch and realized it was already 1 am. There was no use in going over there now. That night Kris set his pills on his nightstand and prayed for an endless sleep.

“Class, this is our new student, Wu Fan. I expect all of you to be very nice to him, alright?” The teacher introduced the young boy to the rest of his new elementary school class.
“Yes, teacher.” The young students repeated in unison.
“Very good. Now Wu Fan, why don't you take the seat next to Tao? See? Right over there by the window.” The teacher smiled and pointed to the empty seat next to a young boy who was daydreaming out the window.
Wu Fan nodded and quickly hurried to the seat next to the boy named Tao. The teacher began her lesson and all the students were at attention, except for Tao, who Wu Fan then realized wasn't daydreaming, but had actually fallen asleep.
“Hey...hey...” Wu Fan poked the sleeping boy's cheek. “Hey...” He didn't want the boy to get caught dozing during the teacher's lesson.
“Eh...wha-what?” Tao's head fell off from it's resting place on his hand and slammed into the desk. The teacher quickly turned around and saw Tao rubbing his head. She shrugged and continued with her lesson, thinking it was just a student who dropped something.
“You fell asleep.” Wu Fan whispered to Tao.
“Oh, thank you. Who are you?” Tao asked shyly, not recognizing the new student.
“Oh, I'm Wu Fan. I just moved here from Guangzhou.”
Tao nodded his sleepy head, “Nice to meet you. I'm Huang Zi Tao. But just call me Tao.” He smiled and Wu Fan thought the boy's eyes resembled a panda's.
“Tao, Wu Fan. Are you finished with your conversation?” The teacher asked, she had stopped her lesson and was starring right at the two.
“Yes. Sorry, teacher.” Both boys lowered their heads in embarrassment and shame.
The teacher sighed, “That's alright. Just as long as you two have learned not to do it again!”
“We won't.” They answered together, and the teacher continued with her lesson.

Kris awoke the next morning to the sound of his alarm clock. He had a headache, but got out of bed anyway. He had an interview for a job in the afternoon and had to pick his suit up from the dry cleaner's. He yawned and opened his bedroom drapes and noticed Tao's bedroom window was open a little. Kris wanted to visit Tao, but he hadn't the time; so he washed up, got dressed and headed out the door on foot to the nearby dry cleaner's.
As he exited his building he noticed the small tree that he and Tao and planted their third year of college was already starting to grow into a small sapling. Tao's small apartment complex had a garden where each resident could contribute something. Tao wanted to plant a tree and had even asked Kris to help him. It was their tree. Tao didn't have time to take care of it much anymore so Kris found a nearby watering can and filled it with water.
“You must be thirsty. Tao hasn't watered you in a while, hm?” Kris said to the tree as he sprinkled it with fresh water. “Ah, now Kris has to leave, okay? I'll come back to take care of you every day!”
Kris headed down the street and stopped at a nearby coffee shop to get some breakfast. He took a seat outside. The sun was warm and the air smelled crisp, like after a long rain. He got out a piece of paper, an envelope, stamp and pen.
To me you are like a fragrant flower.
However in the winter, you begin to wilt.
I will brush the snow away from you so you may keep living on.
Kris mailed the letter at the mail box across the street from the hospital. The dry cleaner's was a few blocks away and Kris ran across the street, just in time for a car to come whizzing by him, barely hitting him by a few centimeters. The driver honked in anger and Kris shrugged the rude driver off. He knew it was his own fault though.
“Hello! How may I help you?” A cheerful old man asked as Kris stepped into the doorway.
“Ah yes, I'm here to pick up my suit. My name is Wu Fan.”
“Just a second, sir.” The man went into the back before pulling out his suit, neatly draped under plastic and hanging off a wire hanger.
Kris smiled and paid the man before throwing the suit over his back and leisurely walking home. He was surprised when he arrived home and saw that the time was already 2:30 pm. His interview was at 4. He quickly jumped into the shower, and threw on his suit. He looked out the window, Tao's window was still open and he began to wonder if it was the open the same way the day before.
On his way to the interview he witnessed an armed robbery, he attempted to fight off the robber and scuffed his shoe in the process, luckily the interviewer didn't notice it and he passed the interview with flying colors. It's not like Kris wanted the job though. It was a good job yes, but nobody wanted to be stuck in an adult life and work.
That night as he was dressing into his pajamas he noticed Tao's window was still open.

“So I hear you and Sunny are dating...” Tao fidgeted with his fingers as he sat next to his best friend, Kris. They were in high school now.
“Yeah...she kinda asked me.” Kris sighed, was he really doing the right thing by accepting Sunny's confession? He didn't know. He had never been confessed to before.
“How did you find out?” Tao asked, betting the relationship would not last very long. He could tell in his dear friend's eyes that Kris was only doing this out of pity.
“I found out she likes to write love poems.”
Tao got up to use the restroom. He spent ten minutes in there. He cried for five of them, and then spent the remaining five trying to hide the results of the first five.

Kris awoke the next morning and pulled back the curtains. He dressed into his suit and put a piece of toast into the oven and a bowl of oatmeal into the microwave. As they were cooking he wrote his love poem of the day and slipped it into his coat pocket so he could deliver it on his way to work. He had written every day for the past year without fail.
Ever since that Thursday in college he had written a love poem to Tao and mailed it out every day, hoping for a reply. He had yet to receive one from Tao.

In the fifth month of his second year of reckless writing, there was a fire in Kris's home.
He was writing his love letter of the day to Tao in the kitchen, and had carelessly (or at least that's what he told the firemen) left a towel on top of a hot pan. He planned to use it to clean up some egg that had splattered on the stove when he was hit by a great piece of inspiration for his love poem. He had quickly thrown down the towel and furiously wrote down his feelings for Tao.
The towel soon caught fire and nearly consumed his entire kitchen. Kris, who had been too distracted by his poem didn't notice the fire until he had finished his longest poem, ranging two pages. He hadn't even noticed the fire had spread to his clothes, and had to be hospitalized for two weeks because of his burns. However, every day he continued to write the letters. The tree he and Tao planted now came up to Kris's neck.
As Kris's second year of endless love poems came to an end, there was still no reply from Tao
