Stupid headcanon. I swear it's rabid. SRSLY. It won't leave me alone, which is kiling my concentration with a titanium baseball bat, so I'm just gonna get the parts that don't have their own ficlette thing coming out.
When Joshua became the Composer, he did it like the sneaky bastard he is. He died, partially on purpose, won his Game, and said he wanted to be a Reaper. As soon as the Composer at the time was finished dealing with the other successful players - not that there were many, this one girl could not make up her mind - and had turned His back to go off and do whatever it was He did when there wasn't a game running, Joshua pulled the gun out of his pocket and shoots the Composer in the back of the head. Five minutes with a Reaper's wings and Joshua became the ruler of Shibuya.
FYI, shot to back of head = instant death I can't remember what the lob there is called, but it regulates nerve signals. Hypo-something...
Neku's entry fee to the duel with Shibuya's Composer was his ability to leave the Game behind him, his ability to move on. When he refused to shoot Joshua, he lost that ability forever. And because Joshua is a complete prick, he forced Neku into the game again. As Neku races towards Towa Records - the goal of the First Day being to reach there - with a new partner in tow, Neku finds himself thinking that maybe this is worth it. He's got friends now, two waiting in the RG for him to win this Game, one running slightly behind him, and one more - who may or may not actually be his friend - that is no boubt watching from the sidelines and finding this increadably amusing, asshole that he is.
Neku stumbles up to Towa Records and leans against the wall, trying to catch his breath. Ten minutes is not long enough to find a partner and run all the way over here while fighting the Noise the Wall Reapers throw at you. This weeks Game Master is a freaking slave driver, Neku desides, looking back towards Cadoi City, watching his newest partner stumble up to him. She's out of breath as well, but she's wearing a smile that says 'We can do this' and Neku really thinks she's right. Both of them slide down so they're sitting against the wall of the record store, out of breath and hot, but confident that they can do this and that they'll get their lives back at last.
For his vantage point atop the Towa Records building, the Composer watches. He doesn't know when it happened, but somewhere during the course of His week with His proxy, the boy changed him. And if a Soul so broken and afraid of the world can open up and change enough to effect Him, then maybe Shibuya does have a chance after all.
Joshua smiles as Neku hands Rhyme a can of soda.
AND I REALLY NEED TO GO CUT THE GRASS NOW.
