History: Commander Shepard, Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3. Personal choices made during the games.

Personality: Commander Shepard is a man of morals. Given the game mechanics of Mass Effect, it is possible to make him (or alternatively her) a Paragon to his people, good and honourable, or a Renegade, full of stern harshness. With both of these kinds of responses open to him, it stands to reason that he is both a honourable and good man and a person with a stern, mean streak a mile wide, when the situation calls for it. He is able to treat those who deserve it with compassion and kindness, while he is equally able to punish the wicked with harsh actions and even use his Renegade side to make brash and sly comments to those he is comfortable with.

Shepard cares. Above all else, he cares. When the galaxy is threatened on a whole three separate times, through the course of five years, two of which he spent dead, Commander Shepard constructs team after team to fight for the safety of everyone in the whole galaxy. He cares what happens to the planets and star systems and races he's come to know. He holds no ill will against any race, while many of the races in-fight and are sometimes racist to others. He wars against a fellow Spectre, Saren, when he is indoctrinated by the Reapers, he allies with a faction called Cerberus, even when he doesn't trust them, he leads a suicide mission to destroy the Collectors who plan to harvest the human race, and he rallies the entire galaxy to fight against the Reaper invasion on Earth, all because he cares about what happens to everyone, and feels it is his duty to protect everyone he can.

While he can be forced to make hard decisions, on the outside he shows resolve and determination, yet inside Shepard often worries about what his decisions will lead to. He shows this, on occasion, when he speaks to the squad members closest to him, admitting worry and concern about the state of the galaxy, the choices he's made, and whether or not they're ready for the next big push against the Reapers. Everything comes back to the fact that he cares about the affect he has on the galaxy, both the good and the bad, and while he doesn't care much about the fame it has all earned him, he uses that as a means to an end, using the notoriety that the name "Commander Shepard" has gained to influence people onto his side, building a stronger force against the enemy.

Determined, motivated, and ruthless against his enemies, Shepard also has a softer side, able to be caring and affectionate to those he cares for. Even so, he is a soldier, and he is fighting against the toughest enemy in the galaxy, and is intent on bringing an end to their cruelty to all races.

Given many choices in the games, Shepard is able to decide how he ends the Reaper threat, but through it all, one thing remains constant. His loyalty to those he cares about. He mostly sticks to the same crew for three games, give or take a few swap outs of characters, and even when he is unable to recruit previous allies, he still aids them however he can. Shepard loves the people he gets close to, and losing them is hard, even when he knows he has no other choice. Each death affects him greatly, and yet he fights because someone has to. In the words of a dear departed friend of the Commander: “Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.”

Imported Character History: N/A

Powers/Abilities: Commander Shepard is a Soldier and has all the abilities that come with that class. Alongside this, when killed in action, Shepard's body is recovered and reconstructed in the Lazarus Project giving him cybernetic implants that repaired his body. → SAMPLES;
First Person Sample: [video]

[The face of a man who has seen a brutal battle comes into view, his skin bruised, burnt, bloodied, and what little of his armour can be seen shows how damaged it all is. Dog tags hang around his neck, also tainted with his blood, and he looks somewhat dazed, although clearly in a lot of pain. His breathing is very shallow, short rasps and he looks barely able to be on his feet, but he is.]

My name--aghh! ...My name is Commander Shepard. I'd like an explanation, but first I need to-- [He pauses to take a breath, leaning back against a wall in Avasta Station.] I need a doctor. Someone who knows cybernetics.

[He swallows the knot in his throat, certain some of it is blood he's swallowing, and the worry in his eyes isn't for himself, it's for Earth, for the people left behind, for his crew and his lover, for everyone he doesn't want to see die. He doesn't know if they survived, only that Kaidan and Garrus got pulled out by Joker and the Normandy-- and he curses under his breath that EDI's mobile unit is probably defunct now. At least her AI will be fine and intact on the ship, so they can work on rebuilding a body for her, and for Joker. But then, of course, there was Anderson-- A shock of pain brings him back into this world, however, and he blinks up at the phone in his hand.]

If a-anyone knows where I can find a doctor like that, let me know. Fast. [He cuts the feed to go and hunt down a doctor if there is one.]

Third Person Sample: Shepard took a deep breath, once he felt capable of doing so. Every bit of him hurt but the doctor had assured him he'd survive, that he'd be able to recover, but that he had to sit out any further galaxy-saving activities, at least until he was better. That was fine by him. After Saren and Sovreign, the Collectors, and the Reapers, he was pretty sure that he was done on being a "big goddamn hero", as several of his friends often referred to him. He wanted to just stop, just breathe for a minute, but he had no way to really relax when his mind was running riot with him.

He was settled on the bed of his apartment, staring at the ceiling and frowning at the fact it wasn't the view he was used to above his bed; the stars, the blue glow that flashed by like smoke. It had given him plenty to look at when he would try to sleep at night and not be able to, because of how much was on his mind. Now? A plain ceiling in a boring apartment, technology behind what he was used to, and he was barely even able to move without a bolt of pain through him. He supposed that's what happened when you got hit by the full force of a Reaper beam. It wasn't supposed to tickle, after all.

Still, he let all of his decisions run through his mind over and over. He didn't know what to think. He'd destroyed the Reapers, which meant destroying the Geth too, and while he felt some guilt over that, he knew the Quarians would rebuild the Geth if they needed them. Restart them somehow. EDI was one of his biggest points of guilt now. She had no mobile unit, she had no way to be with Joker how she had before, and Shepard knew they could build a synthetic form for her again, identical to what she had, but it still wasn't fair. Even so, the galaxy was safe, that was what mattered, even if he wished that it could have been done without the losses they had.

Raising his good hand to rub his eyes, the recovering arm slumped over his stomach, Shepard let out a tense sigh. Ashley Williams. Mordin Solus. Than Krios. Admiral David Anderson. A lover, two friends, and a father figure, all four of them lost because of this huge mess. He could count his blessings, certainly, but the losses still hurt. Even so, good things had come of the bad, and now everyone would be okay, the Reapers were gone, and he had someone left to love. Kaidan Alenko. Shepard smiled to himself as he curled that good hand around his dog tags for only a moment before pushing himself to sit up with a low groan of pain. Moping wasn't his style, and Dr. Chakwas would scold him for being up and about while injured, but he had to do something. A careful walk around Mandalus, that was probably the best option for now.
