At liturgy Fr. Jo blessed palms and pussy willows and we got to hold them through the whole liturgy (well, I did, but you're supposed to hold them at all the entrances and the Gospel). I get distracted by the puffy willows and like to pet them ( Read more... )

Theophany? What's that?

(Sorry... was brought up Presbyterian, and while my grandmother was a devout Catholic, she was rarely able to attend Mass.)

Theophany is more celebrated in the Eastern Church than in the Western Church. It is on January 6th and is when John the Baptist batized Jesus.
However, the pope has encouraged more focus to be on it and other events (that he has added to rosary devotion as the Glorious Myseteries) because they are a big part of our salvation history.

I get the same way at the liturgies on special days.

Yesterday was for us the "Sunday of Orthodoxy." It was my first experience of such. And, in liturgical terms, there probably wasn't a whole lot of "finesse" to it, but I was just totally taken with the Sunday School children carrying the icons in procession. Almost brought tears to my eyes.

My wife being Episcopalian and me, now, attending a Greek Orthodox Church, our Sunday dinner table was decorated with icons and palms yesterday. I thought it was a nice combination.

That is a nice dinner table combination. My husband brought no religion with him, so my traditions seem to win out. And he likes them because thye are so colorful. :)

Isn't the Theophany part of the Luminous Mysteries, rather than the Glorious?

Yes, yes! you are right; that is what has recently been encouraged in rosary prayer and devotion -- the Lumionous Mysteries.
